Lawmaker worries that a national discussion of DADT will force parents to tell children about gays

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The chairman of the House Armed Services Committee on Tuesday said he thinks the military should keep its ban on openly gay service members in part because he doesn't want to open a national discussion about homosexuality.

Rep. Ike Skelton, a conservative Missouri Democrat, said he thinks the debate in Congress over the proposed repeal of the "don't ask, don't tell" law might force families to explain homosexuality to their children.

"What do mommies and daddies say to their 7-year-old child?" Skelton asked reporters during a media breakfast.

1. Yawn. I knew about gays at the age of 7, and in fact, one of the first questions I asked in sex ed
class was what are the biological origins of being gay. That question was put off and never answered though.

2. So some folks want their own ignorant version of DADT?
Because not asking and not telling will make them go away. Sigh.

5. Kind of like..
the discussions that have been already been going on about DADT? Maybe he's worried acceptance will promote homosexuality. Perhaps Dick Cheney should work his way into the limelight again and teach us all how good, Conservative parenting prevents the spread of the disease.

21. That's what my 75 year old father (former Army officer) is worried about - that
if we are more accepting and open about homosexuality, everyone will become a homosexual then.

I always suspected, with his extreme misogyny, that he might be secretly gay. He hates women with a virulence I have seldom seen elswhere in my life. And women pick up on it too, and think he's the biggest jerk they've ever known. Shrug.

8. When their 7 year old asks about domestic policy concerning equal rights among military personnel?
All of which is besides the point: So what?

I think this same argument was made against desegregation. It is just as ridiculous then as it is now.

9. And the irony?
I would be happy my 7 year old (and I actually have one) was even asking me about pending legislation. That's more than I can say for most adults.

I can just see it now. "Daddy, what's the DADT legislation that recently passed the house all about?"

You go girl!

12. He's trying to close the barn door after the horse has shit and left.
Duh.

The ongoing gay marriage debate and pop culture has already left the barn. Ellen DeGeneres, for example, has a daytime talk show. And Rachel Maddow has a nighttime talk show. And there was a TV show about a gay guy that was quite popular. And another TV show about 5 gay guys that was also pretty popular although not as long lived.

Skelton worries too much. It's just an excuse to do nothing.

16. What do they say, the same thing they would tell their kids at whatever age they'd ask them,
be it the hateful ignorant BS, or the actual honest truth.

17. Oh please. So we'd have to tell them that people love who they love
Not about sex.

And I don't remember them caring when my kids were elementary school age back in the '90's, and they talked about blow jobs all day long, a specific sex act that I had to explain.

19. I just explained that to my 5 year old daughter.
We were watching Glee, and it came up on the show.

"Is he in love with that boy?" she asked.

"Some boys love other boys. Some girls love other girls"

"What?" she chuckled, "Really?"

"Really."

"Okay."

then we moved on.

20. That's all that is necessary
They act like you have to go into the mechanics and hydraulics of it all.

I had the same conversation with my kids when they were about that age, and their reaction was the same. "Oh, okay."

24. Uncle Jay? Do you want to hear something funny that I told my Mom?
What's that, Vinnie?

That Bobby is your husband...boys can marry other boys, I saw it on TV.

That was my nephew when I had the kids for the week-end. He was 5-6 years old at the time. I remember that exchange like it was yesterday. Kids crack me up.

23. Yeah, I'll bet that's a harder question to answer than...
"Mommy, why do our Army/Marine guys go over into other countries and drop bombs that kill little kids and blow their arms and legs off?"

:sarcasm:
