Homeless Vet doesn't want a home: He calls it "BLOOD MONEY"
First, let me say he's an un-medicated bipolar. Next, he was killing Kurdish guerrillas in Saddam Hussains' Iraq in 1975. He calls his government entitlements "blood money."

I've told him that another branch of the government gives these checks and it's not a part of the DoD; but that's not enough.

He's a good source for my upcoming series of articles on the homeless. He's a sort of hookers councilor on the streets:

But how do I get him help?

I try to help fellow vets off the streets here in MA: But I can't save them all.

2. Well you know a lot about his background, including medical
which suggests he's got care or gets care. If his still cares about care, and all things considered he may not, helping him back to the place he accepted care from might be something he'd find acceptable.

As you know inability to deal with institutions really sinks a person's global assessment of functioning scores. Folks with low GAFs who really need help most are actually least able to approach and accept it.

4. He got diagnosed when the police had him thrown into an institution....
He needs the better care VA Boston Healthcare Systems would provide. Maybe the upcoming rain will assist me in my quest.

6. I know exactly how that goes...
though in most counties in the US a person suspected to be a risk to themselves, or others, wouldn't have been released without some plan to access further care. I know, that's exactly how I got handed over to VA mental health.

7. What do you do for other mentally ill homeless?
That's where I'd start with him.

That and see if there is a Housing First program in your area and tell him it's through a non-profit, because at least in part, it probably is.

15. okay how about this
Tell him that he should take the help that is available to him, so that he can use it to better help others who do not have access to any help. He can set up his home and open it up to others who need help. He sounds like someone that wouldn't do it for himself, but maybe for others...

16. "Tell him that he should take the help that is available to him" Here's something to ponder.
People don't usually like to be told what to do. I mean, think about it... do you?

People don't get much out of being pushed, ordered around, or forced. If we are honest, I think we know that about our own selves. As a vet, he is probably already reacting to a lot of that sort of thing, anyway.

He needs to be listened to and heard.

Just like the rest of us.
