Executive Order won't work for more unemployment benefits for 99ers

While the Senate debate the unemployment extension starting again today, Americans who have run out of all available emergency benefits (Tiers I-IV), the so-called 99ers, recently tried to make the case that President Obama should sign an Executive Order for a Tier 5, or additional benefit weeks.

Even if the Senate comes up with a version of extending existing unemployment benefits through November, that won't help those who have already received up to 99 weeks of benefits and still can't find a job.

But an Executive Order can't be used to accomplish that either, according to Rep. Jim McDermott's, (D-Wash.) office. Congress must be the body that extends unemployment benefits, and it first has to first fix the benefit extension for those whose benefits are expiring after only 26 weeks.

I may not be here on DU much longer. My electric and my cable connection are going to be shut off any day.

I just wanted to thank all my friends on DU for all the encouragement and solidarity and inspiration all during the Neocon Bush years .

That was an exciting 8 years, no? We had fun... Free speech zones and invitation only public meetings and mission accomplished and yellow cake.

Now it's history..old news. I don't know what is next. My benefits ran out June 7th and I am toast.

Take care guys... there are many wonderful people here on DU..Keep up the good fight. I will miss you all. I may be able to check in at the public library to read DU .. but I don't think I will be allowed to post. Peace on earth and hoping for better times.

2. Serious question. Does our Constitution grant authority to a President to spend money not
appropriated by congress as required by our Constitution, i.e. "No Money shall be drawn from the Treasury, but in Consequence of Appropriations made by Law; and a regular Statement and Account of the Receipts and Expenditures of all public Money shall be published from time to time."

3. I hope with every breath I take, that this turns around quickly
for you, for millions of others (and for everyone of us who may be joining you).

I am anguished by this. I always thought my WWII generation parents had it rough and certainly the war was a tremendous challenge and hardship. But, they lived very good and secure middle class lives--lives that are no longer possible today.

I wish you only the best, my friend.

7. The comment in your profile just completely blew me away
"The real challenge is not the right vs left.. this is a distraction to divert attention away from the true political failure in Washington. The real battle is up vs down.. the 1% at the top who control 95% of all profits and socialize their losses."

Brilliantly stated my friend. And your grace under pressure is inspirational.

Some people do care and are fighting on your behalf and the behalf of others like you. Actually, we're all like you since the vast majority here are in the bottom 99%. You are not alone. Please know that.

10. God, what a country
How the hell did this come about? I blame Reagan and everybody who believes the propaganda that if you work hard you can make it. When there are no jobs and no benefits, what are people to do, starve?

13. Yep, that's what's expected of us
"United We Stand?" Nope. Bullshit. It's "I've got mine, fuck you if you can't pull yourself up by your own bootstraps." This mindset is now so ingrained that people will allow friends and even relatives to end up on the streets with only a "well, isn't that sad." Don't bother asking for help from the government. There is no help. :-(

18. I probably will be right behind you.
I see now that Americas ruling parties only cater to corporate welfare and the peons what work for them are lucky to get healthcare and a retirement. Social welfare doesn't create rich people money like tax breaks and kickbacks. This country is a sad mockery of what it would like to be.

25. 1.2 million people lose their unemployment benefits tomorrow!!
:banghead:

Come Friday, 1.2 million people will lose access to the extended unemployment benefits, a number that will grow by several hundred thousand every week after that.

The legislation, known as the "tax extenders" bill, would reauthorize extended unemployment benefits for people out of work for six months or longer, would protect doctors from a 21 percent pay cut for seeing Medicare patients, and would provide billions in aid to state Medicaid programs.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/06/23/unemployment-jobs-bill-grim_n_623553.html

What's astounding that this bill has been starved down to about 30 billion to appease Rethugs, and still no go. They're basically saying, "Drop dead", to millions of unemployed Americans who are going to lose the only income they have been surviving off. The job market is still horrible, and is likely to stay that way for years to come.

Meanwhile, they keep passing one war supplemental appropriation bill after another, without any difficulty.

If I understand correctly, the Senate passed a war supplemental appropriation $59 Billion bill in May, and they are going to vote on another $30B war bill in July.

:banghead:

28. And what's wrong with a few wars now and then? I'll tell ya
Edited on Thu Jun-24-10 05:56 PM by truedelphi
What's wrong.

It's my understanding that 80% of the oil BP was planning on producing this year was going to DOD for its wars.

Damn these fuckers. They have their cute little meetings in Copenhagen for "Climate Control" where they are picked up at the airports and get into the limos. They water down the Climate Bills so there is no meaning left in them, apart from the fact that those who are the poorest are made to feel the worst.

We will soon be told that the nation has to continue to fight in Afghanistan as we need the minerals there (Or maybe we were told that already.)

We are fighting wars so that we have the resources to use to fight more wars.

No jobs, no unemployment benefits. (Most created jobs during May 2010 had to do with census hiring.) And the Congressional Oversight Committee on TARP was so polite on Tuesday, as they smiled and nodded at every statement that Geithner made, continually regurgitating the pap that the economy is in a recovery mode.

Apparently nobody on that Committee has a model of economic performance that examines what steep doo doo this nation is in, as more than 25 states have huge deficits and are pink slipping their service people. And no mention made of the HUGE CATASTROPHE that is sheening up the waters of the Gulf, about to poison the rainfalls so that our food is toxic, or perhaps dies before it reaches harvest time.
