County commissioners sign letter to President Obama calling for no drilling and a focus on clean energy"Standing against a perfect backdrop of sand, blue sky and ocean waves, leaders of four South Florida counties signed a letter to President Obama on Thursday, calling for a continued ban on drilling off the Florida coast and strong legislation to fight global warming.
County commissioners from Broward, Palm Beach, Miami-Dade and Monroe held a news conference at John U. Lloyd State Park in Dania Beach to urge protection of the state's coastlines in light of the disaster in the Gulf.
"The oily sheen blackening the Gulf is a stark reminder of our oil addiction," Broward County Commissioner Kristin Jacobs said. "We must find a way to reduce our use of oil."
Also signing the letter to Obama were Palm Beach County Commissioner Shelley Vana, Miami-Dade County Commissioner Katy Sorenson and Monroe County Commissioner George Neugent. The four counties last year signed a compact to fight global warming because they are among the lowest-lying parts of the United States and highly vulnerable to rising sea levels.
The letter to the president notes that the four counties have long opposed drilling off the Florida coast.
"The devastating nature of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill" reinforces the need to reduce the nation's reliance on oil, whether foreign or domestic, the letter states. It calls for legislation to reduce the use of fossil fuels and to increase the development of renewable energy sources. It calls for the full restoration of the Gulf coastline to its pre-spill state. And it calls for the continued ban on drilling off the Florida coast.
"Florida shouldn't become the next oil state," said Sorenson. "We're the sunshine state. Think, baby, think."
