but I haven't been able to upload a new image since I uploaded the very first one when that function became available. Apparently I have to delete it or something, to make room for a new image, and don't know how.

I think it's the best DU Avatar I've seen in years.

Go to > Options > Edit Your Profile > Clear the box that contains your current avatar image > Click Update > Return to the Options/Edit Profile screen > Upload new avatar image > Copy/Paste the image name that results into your Avatar Image field > Click Update
