What is the status of the unemployment extension?
Edited on Thu Jul-08-10 07:28 PM by doc03
A friend from work called me this morning and told me he lost his unemployment. He is 52 and has a house and car payment. He has been laid off for over 1 1/2 years has no job prospects. Just what is a person in that situation to do, Republicans?

1. cash out his 401k?
raid his savings?

go on the dole?

Those ares sadly about his only choices.

As for unemployment extension, not scheduled to be voted on by the Senate until their return next week.

9. The last I had heard that it was a sure thing after the
Congress returns. I lucked out I was laid off on my 61st birthday last April and was able to go on SS and my company pension this year. They shut our plant down last April, I would guess the average age of our workforce is probably 55, I feel for the people in their 50s. The unemployment office thought my buddy's best chances was to go to class and be recertified as a coal miner since he worked in the mine before. The problem is the coal mines have a very tough physical test and they don't want anyone that old anyway.

2. Tell him it is vacation time ...
and tell those facing high out of pocket HC expenses that we tried, but gave into the insurance companies who stand to lose a significant portion of their paying clients when the boomers retire.

3. Unless another senator changes their minds.....

NADA.. until W. Va. gov appoints a replacement for Senator Byrd.. and that looks like it will take a few more weeks.. and that is assuming the new senator will vote for the extension.

4. Honestly in my state he would already be homeless and living in a canal while his children are
eaten by alligators...

I think our max unemployment benefit is $300 or something equally ridiculous.

5. Conservatives think he should sell everything he has
and once he's destitute, he can qualify for social service, IF social services are still around if Congress changes hands.

16. From what I've heard, it's tough to qualify for social services, and then you just
have to keep waiting and waiting. I don't know what these people are supposed to do tomorrow morning when they get up and don't have eggs in the fridge.
