Is it safe to travel to any Carribbean destinations right now?
I've got a plane ticket that I must book by September and I'm thinking of going to Nassau. The other choices are Punta Cana, Montego Bay, Cancun, and Aruba. Is it safe to go to any of those places right now, and does anyone know if the oil has hit any of those places yet?

6. Aruba, as I understand it, is low risk for hurricanes.
There isn't really all that much there, though.

2. The Caribbean is supposed to have been unsafe recently?
Aside from the Dudus situation in (part of) Jamaica, what's been in the news to get you worried?

5. Nothing I can think of.
I'm just wondering which places are more tourist friendly and which ones aren't. Jamaica is definitely out due to the extreme unrest there but I don't know if like Nassau or Aruba are safe.

7. Bahamas and ABCs are safe, sure. So is Jamaica, except maybe for one
neighborhood in Kingston. Might avoid the Honduran Bay Islands for the time being, too, although they have traditionally been shielded from any unsavory activities on the mainland because of the tourist $$$ they bring in. IMO and IME, traveling to the Caribbean is no less safe than vacationing in Myrtle Beach or Miami. Probably even somewhat MORE safe because those little islands desperately want to keep the tourism money flowing in.

14. Miami
Most all of the islands are safer than Miami. The British VI are safer than the American ones .Do not go to Kingston and in the Bahamas go to the family islands for more safety and relaxed fun, beauty. If you have to have bright lights then Nassau but for a family and security the out islaNDS OR FAMILY ISLANDS ARE BETTER.

9. No oil in Mobay or Aruba
can't speak for anywhere else. It's safe but I'd keep an eye on the Caribbean sea at the moment. I'm watching that system with nervous interest.

10. The entire region is very dangerous right now. You'd better send me ahead first to establish...
a safe area for your vacation.

15. I was in Negril, Jamaica, about a month ago.
Negril is about two hours away from Montego Bay. There was no political unrest there at that time...Kingston is on the opposite corner of the island, so it would be a little like being afraid to go to Knoxville because of unrest in Memphis, or Savannah because of unrest in Atlanta (to give two examples close to where I live). People were aware of what was going on, and had their opinions about it, of course, but it didn't really have an immediate impact on their lives. Security leaving Jamaica, however, was far stricter than it apparently has been in the past. I got searched twice, but it was a small price to pay for the experience.

As far as the oil, it would have to go around Cuba first. I don't think it will be a problem at this point. I have seen a few stories about Dengue fever being pretty bad in the Caribbean right now, but I don't recall seeing Jamaica mentioned directly.
