that it reveals a deeper truth (while making its joke): providing us with what the character in question would have said had he or she been a tad less self-conscious, guarded, perceptive, etc. That is, such CAPTIONing (as a verb) might reveal a more essential self in those ethical midgets we choose to CAPTION. But the joke is, in comedy, always primary. So sometimes we just go for a cheap joke. (But you're right, captions at DU have traditionally been creative unless otherwise indicated.)
