The new 'LA 30/10' initiative, from LACMTA's website, www.metro.net
The Concept

Simply stated, 30/10 means accomplishing 30 years’ worth of transit projects in just 10 years.

The Concept is simple:
The concept of the 30/10 Initiative is to use the long-term revenue from the Measure R sales tax as collateral for long-term bonds and a federal loan which will allow Metro to build 12 key mass transit projects in 10 years, rather than 30. Accelerating construction of these 12 key Metro projects will result in substantial cost savings Successful implementation of the 30/10 Initiative will also deliver immediate benefits like hundreds of thousands of jobs to improve the local economy, reduce greenhouse emissions and ease traffic congestion. The 30/10 Initiative is both an unprecedented step forward for LA County and a model of progress for the entire nation.

Employment Benefit:
160,000 new jobs will be created
Annual Benefits with 30/10:
77 million more transit boardings
521,000 fewer pounds of mobile source pollution emissions
10.3 million fewer gallons of gasoline used
191 million fewer vehicle miles traveled

The Projects

Orange Line Extension

Exposition Transit Corridor Phase 2

Gold Line Foothill Extension

East San Fernando Valley North-South Transit Corridors

Crenshaw/LAX Transit Corridor

Regional Connector Transit Corridor
Westside Subway Extension (to be opened in segments)
West Santa Ana Transit Corridor

Eastside Transit Corridor Phase 2

1. It's such a wonderful approach for so many reasons, with so many benefits, that ...
the GOP will undoubtedly do all that they can to block it.

;-)

6. Los Angeles
Metro, as the nation's largest urban landowner, dug into its deep pockets for the down payment. Two recent sales tax increases have provided the rest of the local funding. Villaraigosa went to Washington to ask the feds to guarantee their bonds (collateralized by sales tax increases) so they can build the $30 BILLION in rail improvements over the span of one decade, rather than 3. LA has built almost 1000 miles of commuter, elevated, light rail and subway lines during the past 25 years. This new program will propel the city to where it needs to be. There's little the Republicans can do to stop it, especially if they don't want to be seen as blocking the creation of 160000 mostly blue collar jobs.

3. bravo
A $30 BILLION investment in Los Angeles in just 10 years. If you ask me, Villaraigosa has just ensured himself a position in history right up there with Tom Bradley and Kenny Hahn. I currently live in Arizona, where politicians feel our economic problems are caused by undocumented workers. Finally a politician who shows some foresight.

4. Where's the line that goes from Disneyland
straight to the Las Vegas whore houses? The pubs were really talking that up last summer.

5. high speed
Metro has at least temporarily bowed out of any California high speed or CA/NV high speed rail initiatives; instead, they plan to take several route segments (San Diego to Oceanside (on the Coaster), Oceanside to Sta Ana (Orange County MetroLink), Sta Ana to Riverside and Riverside to San Bernardino (Inland Empire MetroLink), San Bernardino to Union Station (San Bernardino MetroLink), Union Station to Palmdale (Palmdale MetroLink) and run a parallel high speed network to connect major SoCal cities. Much cheaper. This is one of the 12 new transit initiatives to be built over the next decade. SD to LA in a little over an hour!!!!

7. I've wondered if the constant work on the 15 to Las Vegas...
Has something to do with the push. It's been going on for years, and the traffic is ridiculous.
