Must see movie: Face in the Crowd.
"A Face in the Crowd" charts the rise of a raucous hayseed named Lonesome Rhodes from itinerant Ozark guitar picker to local media rabble-rouser to TV superstar and political king-maker. Marcia Jeffries is the innocent Sarah Lawrence girl who discovers the great man in a back-country jail and is the first to fall under his spell. Written by alfiehitchie

1957

This 1957 movie prophesied the coming of today's political scene. Andy Griffith does an amazing version of George W. Bush about 40 years before Bush came on the scene. Amazing film.

3. No one can play a sonofabitch as well as Griffith...
okay, maybe Robert Mitchum, Lawrence Tierney, and Alec Baldwin

I think that Griffith is the most underrated actor of all time.

5. I want to dislike Kazan, but he still made some of the greatest films ever.
According to his autobiography, he also screwed ever starlet worth the effort -- from Marilyn to Vivian Leigh.

7. I think that is indicative of Kazan's character...
many other Hollywood Lotharios drew the line at both Monroe and Leigh. They saw it as taking advsntage of their emotional problems. And there would be no sport in bedding them.
But as we all know, Kazan rarely suffered from ethical considerations. "What is good for Elia is good for the world!"

6. Someone who knows how to put scenes from movies on DU
or on YouTube should take the scene in which the politician speaks out against Social Security. He says exactly what the Peterson crowd is saying today. The whole movie predicts what the right wing is doing today. And Kazan shows how a figurehead like Ronald Reagan was schooled in right-wing theology/politics. The movie is incredibly far-sighted. I sincerely think that, if every person on DU watched that movie, the conversation here would change quite a bit. Most DUers already understand the truths that movie shows, but too many don't. They don't really appreciate how they are being manipulated by a rich bunch of extreme right-wingers. Surely the politician in the movie was patterned after Prescott Bush.
