Turbines too loud for you? Here, take $5000

Patricia Pilz of Caithness Energy, a big company from New York that is helping make this part of eastern Oregon one of the fastest-growing wind power regions in the country, is making a tempting offer: sign a waiver saying you will not complain about excessive noise from the turning turbines — the whoosh, whoosh, whoosh of the future, advocates say — and she will cut you a check for $5,000.

“Shall we call it hush money?” said one longtime farmer, George Griffith, 84. “It was about as easy as easy money can get.”

Mr. Griffith happily accepted the check, but not everyone is taking the money.

— pockets of resistance are rising with the windmills on the river banks.

5. From someone that lives near a turbine......

One thing (swoosh) that (swoosh) you have (swoosh) to (swoosh)understand (swoosh), is (swoosh) that (swoosh) the (swoosh) noise (swoosh)never (swoosh) stops! (swoosh) (swoosh) (swoosh) So (swoosh), the (swoosh) best (swoosh) thing (swoosh) to (swoosh) do (swoosh) is (swoosh) to (swoosh) never (swoosh) allow (swoosh) them (swoosh) to (swoosh) get (swoosh) built! (swoosh)

I (swoosh) assure (swoosh) you (swoosh), once (swoosh) you (swoosh) allow (swoosh) them, you (swoosh) will (swoosh) regret (swoosh) it! (swoosh) Before (swoosh) long (swoosh), there (swoosh) will (swoosh) be (swoosh) more (swoosh) of (swoosh) them! (swoosh), and (swoosh swoosh swoosh) then (swoosh swoosh swoosh) it (swoosh swoosh swoosh) only (swoosh swoosh swoosh) gets (swoosh swoosh swoosh) worse!

So (swoosh swoosh swoosh swoosh) think (swoosh swoosh swoosh swoosh) before (swoosh swoosh swoosh swoosh) you (swoosh swoosh swoosh swoosh swoosh) take (swoosh swoosh swoosh swoosh swoosh) the (swoosh swoosh swoosh swoosh swoosh swoosh) money!

Point made!

9. From someone who lives near a busy road...
One thing (varoom) that (varoom) you (varoom) have (varoom) to (varoom) understand (varoom) is (varoom) that (varoom) the (varoom) noise (varoom) never (varoom) stops (varoom)(varoom)(varoom)(varoom)(varoom)(varoom). Even at (varoom) night and (varoom) on the (varoom) weekend (varoom) it only (varoom) slows down (varoom) some, never completely (varoom) stops.

Personally I'd rather listen to (swoosh) than (varoom), we have a lot of Harleys and monster truck type vehicles around here and they can be extremely loud. Then there's the dump trucks and tractor trailers with their Jake Brakes that make a horrendous rattling, roaring sound when they use the compression release to slow down. Not to mention the sport bikes that (whoop) (whoop) (whooooop) up the road from the red light through the gears.

Funny thing is I don't really notice the noise any more unless I consciously listen for it, even my two barky dogs quit getting upset after the first week at the most and ignored the (varoom) noise.

11. From someone who lives in the shadow of a coal burning power plant:
One thing (cough) that (cough) you (cough) have (cough) to (cough) understand . . .

Well, you get the idea.

Personally, I think most of the objection to windmills is NIMBY.

Nor do they contribute to acid rain.

14. Low frequency noise caused by the turbine may have health effects.
You may be accepting cash to compromise your health.

15. Here's what gets me about all this.
I work in a school district with a huge coal burning power plant - The Cherokee in Denver. I don't live there, but our kids do. They grow up with poisonous gases and all the rest that comes with a plant like this. And we generate power for millions along the Front Range - most of whom don't really give a shit about our kids.

But golly, put up a wind turbine and watch the whining start. Heaven forbid YOU should have to bear any burden for the electricity you use. No, we should put those things where the poor people live - like we already do!

Disgusting.
