Anti-gay Prop H8ers move on to target Prop. 19

no surprise, of course. but some strange bedfellows.

The legalization fight in California is making some bizarre bedfellows out of once disparate groups like anti-gay rights activists and democratic candidates like Jerry Brown, Dianne Feinstein, and Barbara Boxer. Yesterday, California's anti-gay marriage leaders announced their intent to defeat a ballot initiative allowing for private, over-21 possession, cultivation, and use of cannabis, which means all leading Democrats running for reelection have aligned with the anti-gay crowd on the issue.

They've even made a video that's full of lies - that are easily debunked (and you can read about this at the link.)

Hmmm, prop H8ers lying about the consequences of changes in law that create a more just and equitable society? whodathunk.

when I was younger, growing up in the south, I used to joke around that all I had to do was look at what side of an issue the religious right was on to know which was the wrong vote. but it was also, sadly, pretty much the truth.

"He who is a judger of my father's law, is no longer a follower of my father's law", "Judge not lest ye be judged," and the ever popular "let he who is without sin cast the first stone."

I had a college friend who eventually became a priest. He used to smack down fundies for fun at dinner in the cafeteria. He used to tell them "gee for people who call themselves "Christians", all you ever seem to quote is the Old Testament. You constantly ignore the words of the New Testament which is the one text that was based on Christ's teachings." He sent quite a few fundies away from the dinner table with their heads hanging low. I loved it.

3. If they weren't simply so wrong about ALL the positions they take
but the reality is that they are fearful people.

their responses are based upon fear and hate.

But the reality is also that they learn, after people do not give in to the right-wingers' fears, and they move on to the next fear/hate topic... they never seem to learn that the fear and hate is the problem, tho.

hmmm.

5. And it worked well in 1939 Germany. They always line up their targets as the
Ills of society that they need to rise to power to correct.

6. Funnily enough, both Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck think the authorities are too concerned about pot.
Even a blind pig gets the occasional acorn. I actually find myself agreeing with Palin and Beck on something for the first, though probably only, time.

Yes to 19!

7. Alaska already has basic decrim for use in the home
so I can't imagine that she would be against that - and, yes, I will give her props for not lying about the reality of her own experience when she inhaled (don't know if she still does but doubt it.)

Beck - he's just so plain... strange. I'm amazed that anyone cares what he thinks about anything. Honestly, he is one of the weirdest men I have ever seen on tv - and that includes Oral Roberts.

btw, why would you ever name a child "Oral?" -- and this is his brother, Anal... that was always such a strange name to see. but I digress.

8. It's going to be the usual crap scare campaign aimed toward parents with young children
And if it is not countered it will work.

9. Not all parents just react

There are some mothers who are out there talking about this issue because they don't want their teenagers to have to spend their lives living down one moment - or more - just as they would with a kid who experiments with alcohol - as a youthful indiscretion, not a substance abuse issue- and rightfully so when you consider that millions of Americans have used or do use cannabis.

And it's useful to regulate, just like with alcohol. to keep cannabis out of the hands of kids and also away from people who have other, far, far more dangerous substances on hand sometimes.

Personally, I do not think it's a good idea for any teenager to consume cannabis - however, if they do so, I would rather they consume something that's safer, something that's not from some person on a street corner. I feel the same way about alcohol.

One thing that's really interesting, to me, is the idea that, by prohibiting cannabis, we are driving our society to consume alcohol instead, among those who choose to use an intoxicant.

Alcohol is much, much more dangerous than cannabis. Yet, we allow its use because we agree that adults may have that choice - and because we saw that the effects of prohibition were worse than the effects of alcohol use among the majority of people.

Isn't it amazing, tho, that we go through this same argument again and again? Civil rights is another one - another variation on that with the prop h8ers - and now another variation on stale prohibition arguments.
