Boehner Is Wrong. Americans Don’t Support Social Security Cuts

by James Parks, Aug 12, 2010

Listen up, John Boehner: The public doesn’t like your plan to cut their Social Security so your rich friends can get another tax break. In fact, according to a poll released today by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner, 68 percent of probable voters oppose cutting Social Security and Medicare to reduce the deficit. The poll was commissioned by the Campaign for America’s Future (CAF), MoveOn.org, AFSCME and SEIU.

Robert Borosage, CAF co-director, put it this way in a press conference call this morning:

2. I would imagine that if the poll was limited to those at or
nearing the S.S. retirement age, 100% are opposed to the cuts.

Boehner knows it would be extremely unpopular, but he doesn't give a damn. Getting people to vote against their self-interest is Republican 101. He wouldn't be in office if he wasn't a good snake oil salesman.

3. Boner and all the Republicans should be ignored except to be scorned and prosecuted
Treat and regard them as the extremist caricatures they are instead of foolishly pretending that their ideology has merit, that they have policies that should be put into law, that they have the nation's interests at heart, and treated them as partners rather than as the enemy.

If you wanted to try it at first to display a little less rancor and give the pukes an opportunity to turn over a new leaf but by the time the summer of last year with all the lying and obstructionist tactics we should have gone to the mattresses and shoved it all down their throats. The more they squealed the more partisan we should have been. The less cooperative they were the more one sided things should have been run.

One sided bipartisanship is a losing proposition. A fool's gold mine.

4. Everyone agrees on this issue. Everyone worth mentioning, anyway.

These people don't give a shit what the plebes think-- that goes for DLC Democrats and Republicans alike. Our opinion simply does not factor into their thinking.

6. You can stop after "Boehner Is Wrong" - that's a tautology.

7. Decades of propaganda
have convinced younger Americans that there will be no social security for them. And they will be right if we dismantle the program as the RW wants.

10. Yep, it's been going for a long time
I heard as far back as middle school in the early 1970s that Social Security was going to be gone by the 1990s or 2000 at the latest. Still going strong in 2010. And yes, I'm aware of the "fix" that was instituted in the 1980s by Reagan and a compliant Congress. At that time, they upped the percentage taken from every worker's paycheck for Social Security, and it poured lots of money into the system. Money that the Republicans promptly raided in the 1990s and the 2000s. Now they want to tell us it's all gone, but it's not. And if the Republicans were shut off from using the funds dedicated to Social Security as props for their never-ending tax cuts for the overrich, Social Security would be fine into infinity, a record of solvency I'd like to see the current defense budget match.
