Drunken Man Yells "Terrorists," Urinates on Mosque Rugs
Incident comes one day after 21-year-old charged in attack on Muslim taxi driver

<snip>

"A belligerent intoxicated man with a beer in hand strolled into a mosque in Queens, shouted the word "terrorists" and callously urinated on rugs as worshippers engaged in prayer, cops and witnesses said last night, according to published reports.

The man, identified as Omar Rivera, reportedly yelled anti-Muslim slurs at those gathered for an evening service at the Iman Mosque in Astoria and defiled the rugs before two men subdued him and put him in a back room while they called 911.

"He stuck up his middle finger and cursed at everyone," Mustapha Sadouki, who was at the mosque at the time, told The New York Post. "He calls us terrorists, yet he comes into our mosque and terrorizes other people. This is a true hate crime."

Rivera was charged with criminal trespassing."

2. It's only a "hate crime" if there's violence involved?

9. Hate crimes charges are typically enhancements to felonies.
It sounds like his crimes were simply trespassing, public drunkeness, vandalism, and being an asshole. Unless the vandalism (peeing on the rugs) was serious enough to warrant a felony charge (usually determined by the cash-value of the damage), they can't charge him with a hate crime.

That's the way it works here in California anyway, but New York may be different. No hate crimes enhancements for misdemeanors.

Federally, the FCRL (the foundation of American hate crimes prosecutions) requires the use of "force" before a prosecution can occur. Both it, and the Matthew Shepard Act that expanded it, specifically exclude hate crimes that don't involve the use of force from prosecution. This was done to appease the fundies who worried that "quoting bible verses" would lead to hate crimes prosecutions.

8. This is yet another example...
of the escalating toxicity in our society. It is time for our leaders to step up to the plate before this gets out of control.

12. I like the first (or most recent) comment on the MSNBC discussion board....
"Legalize Marijuana"

That would acutally alleviate this particular sitation. Too mellow to start a ruckus and you really don't need to pee.

17. Serious, non-race-baiting question here...
Why is it whenever anybody brings up Germany in the 1930s, someone gets offended?
Hitler didn't gain power in a vacuum, people. He got it by sucking up to the thugs and disenfranchised.

18. Because people have literally demonized Hitler as ...
... a kind of Satan incarnate. When I was a Christian, I considered him to be the Antichrist of Revelation. As a result, comparing any mere mortal to the god of evil is immediately ridiculous. They forget that Hitler had a mother and father, had aspirations of being an artistist, answered his country's call in WWI and fought with distinction, was well-liked even if others found him odd, had wickedly funny sense of humor, a soft spot for animals (but was not a vegitarian) and was in every way a self-made man (unlike FDR or Churchill). In other words, he was very much like anyone else. I think people find that disturbing too and the demonization helps us forget that. The truth is that under the right circumstances, any one of us could have become as monsterously evil as Hitler. And he and his henchmen were about as evil as it is humanly possible to be. But it is simply the evil of being human and not any sort of Satanic evil.

As you say, Hitler didn't start off as a monster and it is important to see how he did it so we know the warning signs. The Republicans and their media allies have taken a chapter from Hitler's political how-to manual. Campaign constantly. Always discredit your opponent and accuse them of betrayal. Rely on core authoritarian principals, but always present something that your immediate audience can support. Talk to libertarian economists about the free market and deregulation. Talk to Evangelicals about traditional values. Constantly prey on fear of "the other." etc. etc.

19. What I meant more
was that Hitler had a lot of help. I agree with you that he was a product of his environment, however.

I think he was at one point a vegetarian, but for medical reasons, hence the meme.

Local Nazi committees were constantly holding rallies, printing hand-outs, recruiting new members and saying stupid things.

24. I'm searching for a movie so bad it will break the will of people to live...
...and turn them into mindless, obedient servants. Mike and his little wind-up toys are just Guinea pigs. True, it is a lot of trouble to keep them marooned in space on a satellite that's bigger than Skylab, but I think the results are worth it.
