Ex-Federal Contractor Indicted For Leaks To Fox News
Ryan J. Reilly | August 30, 2010, 2:45PM

A former contractor for the State Department has been indicted on charges he leaked national defense information to a national news organization, according to an indictment unsealed late Friday.

Stephen Jin-Woo Kim -- a former senior adviser for intelligence who was on a detail to the arms control compliance bureau in the State Department -- allegedly gave national defense information to a reporter. The news organization is believed to be Fox News, and the information was about North Korea, according to news reports.

A review of Fox News articles about North Korea in that period -- when concerns about North Korea's missile launches were reaching a fever pitch -- reveals a June 23, 2009 http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/06/23/intel-north-korea-expected-launch-short-medium-range-missiles/ story that says North Korea issuing a warning to mariners about an upcoming live-fire missile exercise in which the country was "likely to fire short- and medium-range missiles, based on the splashdown zone referred to in the notice and other activities that are consistent with such launches." The story refers to "counterproliferation officials" in addition to the defense officials cited in much of the rest of Fox's coverage at the time, and went on to discuss the specifics of North Korea's missile and nuclear arsenals.

Kim's lawyers said the prosecution was inappropriate.

1. How do DUers feel about this leaker?
Is it hypocritical to support Wikileaks and not support this guy?

5. Treason for both
Although I am severely against both wars. I think that this
Wiki Leaks guy is just as bad as this contractor. The Pentagon
should find out everyone involved in the leaking and give them
capitol punishment. There are many informants and others that
trusted us and helped us that are now in danger because of
this Wiki Leaks clown. I think the Iraq war should have never
happened and we should bring home our troops today but this is
not the appropriate way to do it.

8. Oh, and capitol punnishment means death penality.
I hope it only gets used on the violent - those that would kill others, not the intelligent - those that would try to stop wars.

10. Death Penalty
I suppose your right and am being harsh but I also think that these soldiers and or government officials that were responsible for these leaks are also responsible for the deaths of the informants.

11. Which informant has been killed? I have not seen any so far - only a threat
that the Taliban will kill them. I would think the Taliban would make their deaths public when they get them.

The truth is, it's highly unlikely any of the names in the documents are real and so likely that nobody is going to be killed. Anyone who's worked with undercover people know this. The information in the release was accessible by contractors all over the world - some of them also working for different countries. Wikileaks gave the US state department first chance at pulling any names they wanted so if they used real names, the blood will be on their hands. But it's way more likely that none of the names are real.

13. Btw, Should everyone at Fox get Capital Punnishment? I mean they played the same role as
Wikileaks and you say this works both ways, right?

16. Fox news has many crimes that fit!!!!
I really don't blame wiki leaks for doing it but the people that were suppose to keep it classified I think should be tried. Fox "news" would have been tried and executed along time ago for their crimes if I had my way.

17. Like someone said it really depends on the intent for the leak and also what
was leaked.
Oh and btw if you are calling for the guy who mainly runs wikileaks to be charged with treason I will wish you good luck on that seeing as he isnt even a citizen of the US and cannot thus be guilty of that crime.

12. but, but, but......." leaked to a NEWS organization"

"A former contractor for the State Department has been indicted on charges he leaked national defense information to a national NEWS organization, according to an indictment unsealed late Friday." Doesn't that rule out Fox?

18. Information isn't damaging in itself, it is divulging that
we have access to their secrets that hurts us.
