11. It's not that we're hard up for contributors...
It's because our managing editor believes Freedom of the Press doesn't necessarily belong to the person who owns it. We print any letter you send us that's not going to get us thrown in jail. Hell, we even print anti-Duane Hagadone letters, and he owns the company. (Mr. Hagadone says those are his favorites.)

So yeah, we've printed such wonders as about a thousand letters saying Obama's a Muslim, quite a few leftist screeds, a bunch of stuff blaming The Other Party for the economic meltdown ("The Other Party" depends on which party the writer is in--we're running about 65-35 in favor of the Democrats being responsible...) and my favorite, a letter we ran just this morning that implies gays and lesbians are a different species. This one was from a man whose business interests include being a rental agent that only rents out churches and in running two Christian billboards along the Interstate. Among other things in his letter, he said gays and lesbians were biologically incapable of reproducing normally. (You folks who are gay or lesbian and who have kids will probably disagree with this.)

16. I didn't mean it as a slam, even though it sounded like I did
I was just astounded that the editors would print this, because it borders on "word salad". Sorry I offended.

3. That was a strange one.
Edited on Sun Sep-05-10 07:21 PM by The Velveteen Ocelot
I *think* what she might have been saying is that they shouldn't sell beer or allow people to drink it at the fair grounds because someone might spill beer on you and then you'd smell like beer and the cops would arrest you unfairly for being drunk even though you hadn't been drinking. And then maybe you'd die?

Why this concern merits a letter to the editor, or why they'd publish it, is beyond me.

12. A few people have complained about beer at the fair
This is the thing: The North Idaho Fair has had beer at it for a very, very long time. Decades. You could drink beer at this fair when I was in high school in the 1970s. But until this year, it's been confined to a "beer garden" inside the grounds. If you wanted to go into the beer garden for a cold one, and the event you wanted to see was going to start before you were done drinking, you had to either throw away or chug your beer. Chugging beer is what gets you REALLY fucked up. Soooooo...the fair organizers decided to let people drink beer throughout the fairgrounds this year. They also decided to charge $5 for a seat in the covered grandstands because in the past, way too many people who didn't want someone sitting next to them would spread out a blanket on the bench on either side of them, so no one could sit.

Before the fair started, all the fundamentalists wrote to our paper about the disasters that would befall us from the beer. When the fair kicked off, there were no more beer-caused problems this year than in any other--unless you TOTALLY remove the beer from the fair you are going to have SOME problems, but there were very, very few. As for the $5 seating thing, a lot of people who really went to the fair told the fair organizers it was a great idea and they should continue to do it, because now you can actually get a seat even if you don't show up five hours before the rodeo starts.

So...now we get letters containing wild fantasies. Oh well...we've been printing Obama-is-a-muslim letters for a very, very long time.

4. I have a story about beer.
It proves both the limitation of things that want to control.

after a few months of not having money I went to the bar. Had some things said from the same things that attempt to control. It works like matrix agents, or the things in fallen. They tip their hand, they showed they think they can stop me from having a beer, or going to the bar. They can take my money, but they can not stop me, because I will get financing again, someone will pay what is due. And I will be who I chose to be, and laugh at the false things that want to control people. And they will pay also.

A couple friends bought me a beer, not much, and months ago, but I say this, they will not change who I choose to be, because someone else thinks that is what a person should be.

They will pay.

5. That made almost as much sense as the LTTE referenced in the OP.
But not quite.

7. You have to have the same experiances to understand it.
Not sure what LTTE means. But I do know I get to choose who I want to be, and all they can try to do is stop people from paying what is due to me.

And when stopped each will have to sell to the blockers part of themselves leading to their destruction. Showing their servitude to such things.

I think it is really brilliant if I say so myself.

9. LTTE = Letter To The Editor.
And I'm still not sure what your remarks have to do with beer. Unless maybe you've ingested quite a lot of it.

15. I was commenting about going to a bar and getting beer.
How could my comments not be about beer, you may be losing touch with reality.

The article specifically says, in a condescending tone, a comment about no beer.

And I will have financing for beer and travel.

How hard is that to understand?

8. Semiliteracy in the USA?
Grandma is trying, in an unsuccessfully anecdotal/rambling sort of way, to explain why she doesn't want people being allowed to drink beer at the fair.

I'm guessing that Grandma didn't get past the 4th grade.

10. She seems to have had nightmares about beer
Something about wrongful arrest after having beer spilled on her.

But she's obviously given it a lot of thought.

13. Sherman Alexie she aint
and she obviously felt compelled to ramble on for 3 paragraphs before getting to the point, and that is that beer drunks are slobs and she doesn't want them at the fair or on the roads.

While I sympathize, yowza!
