Happy F*ckin' Labor Day!
by Michael Moore
Mon Sep 06, 2010 at 06:10:23 PM PDT

....................

Before there were unions, there was no middle class. Working people didn't get to send their kids to college, few were able to own their own fucking home, nobody could take a fucking day off for a funeral or a sick day or they might lose their fucking job.

Then working people organized themselves into unions. The bosses and the companies fucking hated that. In fact, they were often overheard to say, "Fuck the UAW!!!" That's because the UAW had beaten one of the world's biggest industrial corporations when they won their battle on February 11, 1937, 44 days after they'd taken over the GM factories in Flint. Inspired by their victory, workers struck almost every other fucking industry, and union after union was born. Had World War II not begun and had FDR not died, there would have been an economic revolution that would have given everyone — everyone — a fucking decent life.

Nonetheless labor unions did create a middle class for the majority (even companies that didn't have unions were forced to pay at or near union wages in order to attract a workforce) and that middle class built a great country and a good life. You see, Rahm, when people earn a fucking good wage, they spend it on stuff, which then creates more good paying jobs, and then the middle class grows fucking big. Did you know that back when I was a kid if you had a parent making a union wage, only one parent had to work?! And they were home by 3 or 4pm, 5:30 at the latest! We had dinner together! Dad had four weeks paid vacation. We all had free health and dental care. And anyone with decent grades went to college and it didn't fucking bankrupt them. (And if you ever used the F-word, the nuns would straighten you out in ways that even you couldn't bear to hear about).

Then a Republican fired all the air traffic controllers, a Democrat gave us NAFTA and millions of jobs were moved overseas (hey, didn't you work in that White House, too? "Fuck the UAW, baby!"). Unions got scared and beaten down, a frat boy became president and, like a drunk out of control, spent all our fucking money and our children's money, too. Fuck.

Not one rally in the Mall.

Not one march down mainstreet.

Not one civil strike.

Not even a banner across the freeway.

We're pitiful.

I'm changing that this week.

Money is the only thing that gets the fucker's attention. Let's stop giving it to them. They already think we are the problem..just 'cause the govt. gives away trillions to the banks and has nothing left for the people.Suddenly WE are the problem. The republican way. Stomp the victim. Well, all we have left is to just say NO to their stuff.

9. UAW praises Rahm, Obama and calls Ratner book 'a bunch of baloney'
"It's a bunch of baloney, I think it's a diversion, " King said in an e-mail response to revelations made in an upcoming book that White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel at one point declared "F--- the UAW" during internal administration debates about the bailout. The Detroit News published a story and excerpts from a draft manuscript, which was provided by the publisher, Houghton Mifflin, ahead of an Oct. 14 publication date.

. . .

"If it wasn't for Rahm Emanuel,... if it wasn't for President Obama and the Democratic leadership in the House and Senate, we wouldn't have an auto industry. Millions of more people would be out of work today," King said during an interview Friday morning on CNBC, a financial news cable channel.

"They have done nothing but to help the middle class in America. I appreciate the Obama administration. I appreciate what they have done for workers in general. Did they do good for the auto industry?

24. UAW is not the only Union, you know. It is one union.
They are not, for example, my Union. It should also be pointed out to you that Moore's agent is in fact Ari Emmanuel, Rahm's brother. Ari takes 10% of everything Moore makes. So Mike is not talking about some distant stranger here. He's talking about the brother of a man he has paid millions of dollars, a man who makes his deals for him.
One might think that if Ari has issues with what Moore said, he would cease representing Moore, and stand up for his brother. This has not happened. Ari seems quiet about this. When he could be making a strong statement, he fails to say a word.
Small world, isn't it?

12. Wow, weren't those post-WWII days...
... the halcyon era enshrined as "the good old days"? I thought that was the kind of America even the GOP wanted to get back to. Oh, that's right -- they aren't interested in the ECONOMIC characteristics of that time, just the SOCIAL inequities.

Oddly, the ability to have decent-paying job security in a family sure did INCREASE many of the "family values" aspects that, frankly, we ALL remember so fondly.

so right about the death of FDR. I know he was not perfect(remember the era too), but he was a great social/economic engineer for real people. The people of Europe and Japan, owe their economy and liberties to him. It is tragic that he could not sway America before he left us.

22. Exactly right -
FDR was pushed to action by the existence of a strong communist party in this country (which of course was decimated in the 50's). But at least he did it - he saw the threat and passed the legislation.

If only we could get ourselves together and push Obama the same way - only I'm not sure it would have the same effect.

35. He'd already planned for the peace before he died, and Truman
stuck with his plans. Rebuilding, rather than reparations; assist, in part or in whole, with the creating of the German and Japanese constitutions; Marshall Plan; etc.

Our victory over Japan and Germany allowed us to embed democratic and liberal principles in their re-built societies.

Too bad we didn't embrace them ourselves.

28. Absolutely true. Every fuckin word.
I remember a chain of grocery store in our area that were still unionized in the late 70's early 80's (Sentry?). A girl I went to O.R. Tech school with was working there at night. Her salary was the same hourly ($6.50 or $7.00 hr in 1979) as they were paying R.N.'s around here with free health care including optical and dental. Our instructor told her in front of the class that she was better off there than at one of the local hospitals, but she said that there was outside pressure to break the union. In '82 or '83, if memory serves me, the stores fired all of the employees and offered to hire them back as non-union workers at non-union wages and bennies.

That's the last one I remember.

33. "after they'd taken over the GM factories in Flint"
That's part of the issue right there. That kind of shit KILLED union causes. In the short term, it always looked like a good thing because it won concessions. But it also turned A LOT of people off of unions.

Union causes had enough merit in their own right without taking 1)taking over someone else's property, 2)shutting down that person's ability to use their property and 3)denying others the right to work that job if they wanted to. All those 3 things did is fire up conservatives and sway some independent minds in the other direction.

Perhaps a better sense of history would solve your myopia, It IS the struggle of Union workers that affords you an 8 hour day, and many other benefits you take for granted. Without that struggle, no matter how "Turned OFF ' You are by it, you'd be eating dry toast, because you had to, not because you would be on a diet. You weren't there, and this "Oh, they stole & took over "Someones" property (A slavish corporation)" doesn't mean crap, when you are treated like a slave. You want to be a Slave again, be my guest, but DON'T tell me that crap. It's NOT historically correct. You are eating the Hand fed Corporate bullshit, Like it was candy, and drinking their Kool-aid. Nobody under 90 remembers how bad workers had it before unions. Slave wages, long hours, no time off, no benefits, no safety rules for workers, etc.

Idiots who buy into the right wing crap and lies have no idea what they're actually voting for.

45. How did the word "Unions" become a bad word?
I live in PA in a once heavy union area and people always put down unions. Saying how they once had their time but their not needed anymore. I just dont get it. They blame the Unions for jobs going overseas or being run out of the states. I dont know if people are jealous because they dont belong to one and dont get as good of pay and benifits or what. Its like putting working people against working people.

I personally work for a great company that is not Union but I also was brought up in a Union household where my dad was the only parent that had to work and we lived comfortable. Not rich by any means but had a nice middle class house in the country with some land. A normal middle class life. But there was twice where my dad was hurt at work and almost died. He lived but the company tried to fire him. They actually did fire him but the Union fought it and won and he was able to get his job back. Without the union he would have lost his job. I dont remember much or didnt pay a whole lot of attention to that problem when I was too young to understand but I do remember my mom telling me what happen and said that are life would have change a lot had he lost his job and to always stick up for and support unions.

Its a shame people look at unions as a bad thing.

46. It is alleged that the union bosses got as bad as the corporate bosses
I've not ever worked union. I heard of union bosses negotiating deals to kick back to the corporate bosses portions of union dues. These are ALLEGATIONS. I've also heard of some ridiculous deals negotiated by the union and corporate bosses that could really cripple the business. All of that said, it would be the ticket if those fucking goldhats were to earn a reasonable salary and boards of directors stop the fucking whining about "we can't attract good leadership if we don't pay some of these losers an overwhelming shitload of money and options." Witness GM, AIG, and the banks.

I've also watched my own industry get fucked these past two years because there is no union and everyone is scared for their jobs. Each of us on my team is doing the work of two people now without adequate compensation. I've also watched my industry ship jobs to India.

50. F**kin thx, Mr. Moore. I'm adding this to my forever list
I realize Michael Moore has done a lot more important work, but this is hysterical. Especially since I attended Catholic School in the days before Vatican 2.

When I get too discouraged & depressed about things, I try to remember the 24-karat comedy routines of the greats over the last decades. Like when the union bashing is red-hot, I think of Gilda Radner & the old SNL crew singing "Look for the Union Label" over their marijuana plants.

Or when the political ethnic attacks get beyond absurd, I think of Archie Bunker reviewing his pre-election flyer, "I call this representative government. You’ve got Salvatori, Feldman, O’Reilly, Nelson–that’s an Italian, a Jew, an Irishman and a regular American there. That’s what I call a balanced ticket."

Or when I have a less than productive exchange with a woman who has a thick Indian accent & tells me her name is Gretchen, I think of Michael Palin & John Cleese doing the "Dead Parrot Sketch" ('ez pinin' for the fjords"). Thanks, Mr. Moore for makin' my f**kin' day:)

54. WTF!
I'm fully with you Michael but what the fuck are we suppose to do about it!? It doesn't matter anymore who you vote for because it's more of the same shit. Voting is fixed and it's not looking like it's going to get better anytime soon. We got scary assholes like Palin jocking for the presidential position. And, banks and big corporations control EVERYTHING.

I've decided to say "fuck it"! I'm not voting no more! I'm done with wasting my precious time and getting my hope up. Waste of fucking time and energy. Just look around and it's fucking clear as day. The interest on credit cards have gone from bad to worse. My co-pay on health insurance has gone up and climbing. I can't refinance on my house b/c the property value compared to what I owe is totally fucked! Our oceans are in jeopardy with off shore drilling and oil in the gulf. There is high fructose corn syrup in EVERYTHING. And, if I want a better diet, I better figure out how I'm going to afford to pay a premium for it! We are enslaved.

What people need to do but way too afraid, is to rise up in mass and refuse to pay their taxes. Fuck! We don't have a say if we don't want taxes taken from our hard earned pay. We have zero control. Plus, we've become a police state by the mere convenience of having cameras in our cell phones. We have become paralyzed with all the bullshit talk about terrorism. The terrorists are our own government backed by big money.

Every fucking day, I worry if my husband's job will be off-shored. Fuck! I don't know what the fuck we will do if that happens. The way of life, the fragment that I fight to hold on to is in jeopardy every single fucking day. My little life, in my little corner of the world had made it to the endangered species list. Fuck! What do I tell my kids. I keep telling them, get a good education so it leads to a good paying job but fuck, is that the truth or just bullshit!?

Frankly, if I had it my way, I would leave this fucked up country of which I am a DRW which, hey, means shit, right! So what the fuck! I don't know where I would go. France looks good but will they have me and my little family?

At the rate we're going, Americans are a stone's throw away of becoming "illegal aliens", scratching on some country's door, with their tongues hanging out, looking for a decent wage.

What the fuck! This little rant helped me get some of this fucking shit off my mind. I'm not so sure, I feel any better though...

66. I want him to be president!
Why can't people like Michael Moore run for President?

Why wouldn't he run.

Why is it impossible to get a decent person in that seat!!??

Fuckin A Mike, beat em with the big ugly bat of truth!
