Koran Burner: Creepier Than You Think - This is a Cult - Rulebook
The DWOC’s “Academy Rulebook,” a copy of which you’ll find here, was created in November 2007 by Sylvia Jones. The document, which details the standards to which a prospective DWOC minister must adhere, addresses topics such as behavior, study, and communication. It is also filled with the kind of creepy directions that are often associated with cults.

For instance, students are directed to cut off most contact with family members. “Family occasions like wedding, funerals or Birthdays are no exception to this rule,” the rulebook notes. “No phone calls. Exceptions can be made under certain circumstances but only after receiving permission.”

The Joneses also barred “Singles” from having “romantic relationships to the opposite sex…Except work things, there is no need to talk at all, or even flirt!” Students were barred from “eating out in restaurants” and warned that they would be weighed “once a week to follow the tendency,” an apparent reference to a weight goal established by the Joneses.

1. Singles shouldn't form romantic relationships with the opposite sex, huh?
That leaves only one sex to form a romantic relationship with then.

These dimbulbs look like the Florida edition of the Westboro Baptist folks in Topeka. The popular media seem to have figured out that they don't need to give the Westboro people any coverage; how long before they decide that the Dove attention-whoring isn't worth the coverage? I don't see much difference between Jones and Phelps.

3. It meets pretty much every warning sign of a cult that I've seen online.
Physically cut off from friends and family, endless lists of chores and tasks to keep free time to a bare minimum, forced to accost strangers to "share the Gospel" with, and several others.

I think the ultimate Freudian slip is Rule #9, labeled in this "rulebook" as "Clothe and Sanity" (sic).

Check yours at the door and kiss it goodbye once you get involved with these sickos!

4. Big shock...
...that a tiny fundie "church" with a handful of members and a predilection for outrageous behavior would turn out to have cult-like features. Branch Fredphelpsians, anyone?

5. Reminds me of the Liberty University student handbook
except that Liberty has fewer spelling and grammatical errors.

6. All religions are cults
But some of them are big and powerful enough to keep people from saying that about them.

12. You know the difference between a cult and a religion?
About 400 years.

8. Isn't it time to examine these cults and deny them tax exempt status?
Or just make religion as irrelevant as stamp collecting?

But no, the "everyone is entitled to their opinion" brigade even if it's wrong will happily let these nutjobs continue without calling them out and laughing at them.

Scientologists, Mormons, Deepaks, Lubavitchers, Jihadits, Teahadits, Reconstructionists, Fundies of any stripe. And didn't we have a guy name Jones and some KoolAid just a little while ago?
Put them all in a sack and whack them with sticks.

9. An article from der Speigel was posted
today about Jones having a church in Cologne until a year or so ago. He was expelled by the congregation because of his hate-filled sermons, so the piece goes. The article can be read here -- http://www.spiegel.de/international/world/0,1518,druck-716409,00.html

10. What is creepier than these 50 creepos are the thousands getting into a knot
Edited on Wed Sep-08-10 09:57 PM by snagglepuss
over an act being done by a bunch of creepos. Ignore them. Why give them any oxygen?

It reminds me of a fight I once witnessed when a deranged homeless person with no legs and one eye, screaming racial obscenities was verbally accosted by someone who took exception to his ravings. I felt like I was in an insane asylum. How, I wondered, could a person who was sane be oblivious to the fact that the person he found offensive was deranged and couldn't be reasoned with. Had a security guard not intervened it would have come to blows.

17. Though it's not really funny
for some reason it cracked me up. I think it's the scene that made you feel like you were in an insane asylum and the fact that that was your reaction to it. I can so relate.

18. I think we have the same sensibility. I agree that one hand it isn't at all
funny yet it is rather hysterical especially if one witnessed it. Had I a video it would have gone viral. What was so very instructive is seeing how people who are caught up in an emotional reaction are blind to what is actually at hand. And I say this as someone who is prone to react emotionally. :hi:

13. This is the kind of information (if any) the media should be focusing on.
This is a media created issue(as is the so called ground zero Mosque). Our media is completely irresponsible in focusing on this wack job and giving him any credibility whatsoever. The media is as responsible as the wack job for any backlash created.

19. No more or less of a cult than any other religion.
The only difference between a cult and a religion is the size of the congregation.
