For me his biggest sin was closing a lot of mental hospitals and putting a lot of very sick people on the streets to fend for themselves. Or not.

I always regarded him as the most dangerous man in the world - simply because he was so aw-shucks adorable and self-effacing and charming. It meant he could sell anything to anybody, especially in a superficial, dumbed-down, self-absorbed culture. He'd sell shit sandwiches to the starving, and they'd buy like crazy - because he'd make it sound so warm and cozy and harmless and morning-y in America.

every student walking out of my Latin American history classes knows what an evil bastard he was. They might not know the ins and outs of his destruction of the American economy (that's for the American historians), but they will most definitely NEVER FORGET what he did to Latin America (along with lots of other presidents).
