Police: Dean Stabbed On MCC's Penn Valley Campus
http://www.kmbc.com/r/25004556/detail.html

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A college administrator, described as a dean, was stabbed at the Metropolitan Community College's Penn Valley campus on Tuesday morning.

According to police, a man in his 20s, wearing a bullet-proof vest, walked up to a man in his 40s and slashed his throat about 9:30 a.m. in the Humanities Building. The victim's injuries are described as serious. Witnesses told police the attack happened without provocation.

Gov. Jay Nixon was scheduled to speak at the college, which is located at 3201 Southwest Trafficway, just minutes before the stabbing. A spokeswoman for the governor said Nixon was at the airport -- 15 minutes away -- when they received word of the attack. The speech was canceled

Antonia reported talking to students who said the attacker, described as a student, was seen entering a computer lab, where the governor was scheduled to speak.

2. I have no doubt that Jay Nixon was the target of an attack.
This is scary. Now it is escalating to attacks on elected officials?

4. Too many crazed people running around with agendas... Must be related somehow, one
would think, to Nixon's visit.

5. Announcement from their website....
All classes at MCC-Penn Valley will go on as scheduled.

The administrator who was attacked this morning at MCC-Penn Valley has undergone surgery and has been listed in stable condition. The police are still investigating the incident and the north end of the Humanities building is currently closed; it is expected to be reopened by this evening. Vice Chancellor Paul Long and Chancellor Emeritus Jackie Snyder are currently overseeing operations and on-campus inquiries while President Bernard Franklin is at the hospital with the administrator and Chancellor Mark James and other MCC administrators and students who witnessed the incident are at police headquarters.

The safety of our students and employees is our top priority and there is no known danger at any MCC facility at this time. Again, the suspect was immediately apprehended and is in police custody.

Please direct any media inquiries to Mary Taylor at 816.604.1460. We will continue to provide updates as information becomes available.

Thank you,
Kathy Walter-Mack
Chief of Staff to the Chancellor

6. No way am I condoning this, but I'm wondering if this is the beginning of increased violence...
...against public "authority" figures.

With anger and rancor ratcheting up public discourse during the past decade or two, will we see more of this?

We've all seen such behavior at political rallies, and we've seen such "calls" for violence coming from public figures (remember "second amendment remedies?").

Is the pot is ready to boil over?

7. I don't think deans are particularly big on the public authority scale.
Unless maybe you're Homer Simpson.

8. True, but I was thinking of the campus specifically...
It seems any environment will have its "authority figures" and for college students, it might be deans...

9. Really?
It'd have put the school president, the professors, and the campus police well ahead of the deans.
