Helen Thomas, a Detroit native and noted journalist, is to be honored this fall with two banquets in the Arab-American and Muslim communities.
Thomas, 90, will be given an award next month at the annual banquet in Virginia of the Council on American-Islamic Relations. And in November, Thomas will be honored in Washington, D.C., at a separate dinner in her honor by the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee. Both groups have active chapters in metro Detroit.
“Join in the celebration honoring Helen's dedicated service to our country as a journalism trailblazer, and her legendary front-row coverage of the White House for over 60 years,” said the committee in a news release this week.
Meanwhile, the Arab American National Museum says it has raised the $10,000 it was seeking to finance a statue of Thomas to be placed in its Dearborn building across from City Hall.
