Old but live dog in a trash bin
http://blogs.sacbee.com/crime/archives/2010/10/old-but-live-do.html

Someone abandoned an old but live dog in a trash bin in Davis, according to the Yolo County Sheriff's Department Animal Services Section.

A maintenance employee at the Danville Apartments in the 1200 block of Kenney Place on Thursday found the dog (left), an elderly gray terrier mix. The female dog, which was unable to stand, had no identification, according to an animal services news release.

An animal service officer transported the dog the UC Davis Veterinary Teaching Hospital for emergency care. A veterinarian said it appeared the weakness in the hind limbs was from age and not trauma, the release states.

Animal Services is asking the public's help in finding the owner of the dog or more information on what happened. Call (530) 668-5287 extension 0 or the Davis Police Department at its non-emergency number (530) 747-5400

10. That's exactly what I thought.
How can we have hope that humans will solve real, complex problems when way too many can't even handle everyday issues decently?

no longer move around. She looks sad and heartbroken.

You just don't throw that away!

I had to put my 13-yr old puppy down because she grieved for two straight months after my wife died. My dog lost weight and her organs started shutting down. I had to put her to sleep. I didn't want to, but knew it was best. I didn't want her to suffer.

BUT YOU DONT THROW A LIVING BREATHING PET/FRIEND AWAY!

You give them dignity in their last days of life!

21. I have three dachsies on their last legs, a 13 yo who had cancer,
a 15 yo with a bad heart and a 16 yo who has dementia. He gets lost in the back yard. I would kick this person in the nuts if I could. Adopt older animals. They will save your life with their goodness.

28. For all we know, the old dog might have thought that the owner
put him there for a good reason and was waiting for him to come back. Unlike humans, dogs tend to be very trustful.

I hope they find the person who did this and prosecute them as harshly as possible.

That poor thing, I hope she makes it. I have a 13 year old dog at my feet right now - she is pampered and loved, as they all should be until the very last day of their lives.

23. I just hugged my 15.5 year old GSP, who is nearing his end
Edited on Fri Oct-01-10 04:50 PM by DeschutesRiver
My old boy has a weak hind end from old age issues, but he is under my care for the long haul, up to and including a release from life at the point at which he needs it, and will never have a moment of not knowing how much we love him. A recent fall that caused 2 greenstick fractures in a rear leg means that our time might be limited, it has been very touch and go. However, with the help of our vet, we have gotten him to a point where he has a 50/50 chance of making it.

I don't know which way it will go yet, but what I do know is that we are here for him. And the idea that someone could take a dog and put her in the trash, rather than either caring for her or euthanizing her, makes me crazy mad inside. And makes me cry. I am thankful for every extra day I have with mine, as I've never had a dog this size live this long - but there is a mentality out there that doesn't see it that way.

Going to throw a pillow by my boy's bed here next to the computer, and give him another massage. And a fat hug, and thank him for every day of coolness we've shared, which has every freaking moment from when I was in my late 30s until now in my early 50s. That's a ton of history - how on earth could someone show so little humanity to have done this to an old dog? I am going to be upset by this for awhile, but am so thankful that someone found her.

God, who does this kind of sick shit?

25. Hugs to you and your dog, I hope he makes it. I know what you
mean, even though my girl is healthy, I'm very aware that she is a senior and anything could happen. I cherish every day with her - she's been with me since she was 8 weeks old. Like you say, a long history. Every one of those days she has given me loyalty and unconditional love. When I got her, I made a commitment for life and she will be taken care of until the very end.

I just can't comprehend the mentality of a person who could have a dog for years and then literally throw them away when they are helpless. That poor dog couldn't even get up and out of the garbage. I wish I hadn't seen the picture in the OP, it's so pathetic and is haunting me. But I hope this has a happy ending and someone takes care of her until she passes.

And I'm sending out some good vibes for your boy.

26. Can't express how much I appreciate the good vibes.
I almost didn't open up this post, because I know things like this happen and I too just can't get the images out of my head.

Old dogs are just such dear little souls. Our boy too has filled our lives with joy since he was 8 weeks old, and protected us and it is the very least I can do now to return the favor. It isn't a chore; it is something I am glad to have the opportunity to do for him.

Me and our boy Max send our best regards to your senior girl, and will have paws and fingers crossed that she can stay by your side longer, as he has done with us (he has been quite active until this, even going on 4 camping trips with dh this year).

Take care, and may you two enjoy many more years together on your journey. :pals:

24. I can only hope for one thing.
That some wonderful soul continues the kind acts displayed by the maintenance employee, the animal service officer and the UC Davis staff, and adopts this dog and loves her for the rest of her time allotted on this earth.
