Black councilman told he should work in a cotton field

Atlanta, Georgia (CNN) -- A squabble at a council meeting in a small Georgia town has caught the attention of the NAACP after a white councilman told his black counterpart that he should be working in a cotton field.

The exchange took place in a recent city council meeting near Macon, Georgia, said Larry Holmes, the president of the NAACP in Houston County.

"They need to learn to respect each other, and they need to stop all the name calling," Holmes said.

"Ever since this new council was elected, there has been different problems. For one thing, they just can't seem to function there in a more pleasant and peaceful manner."

Racists are exposing their hatefulness everywhere we turn nowadays. Personally, I'd rather them be open about it than try to hide it (you know they're dying to spew tons of hateful names).

:puke:

1. Good grief......
The racism filters are off right now. It's no holds-barred.

2. Wow, there were some things that were totally over the line not long ago.
Edited on Thu Oct-21-10 08:05 AM by Lasher
Now with this teabagger fascism, there just isn't a line anymore. This is just despicable. There are times when it is debatable whether something is an act of racism or not. This is not one of those times.

11. It would suprise you to know that I hear more about
the Civil War on DU than I ever do in conversations with my neighbors, coworkers, family and friends down here in the South.

We really don't think about it as much as you think we do.

That said, there is no excuse for racism no matter where you are in the country.

12. Didn't mean to ruffle any feathers
I was infarct thinking about many here in TN. And when I say many I refer to those who like displaying the Civil War battle flag and flaunting it for the express purpose of telling those who see it the war isn't over. BTW we still have a lot of closeted KKK'ers. We saw to much to ignore the possibilities during election 2008. And the teabaggers, when they began arriving at rallies armed and were allowed to stay, they were sending a clear message.

13. It's not even defined by region any longer, in my experience...
Edited on Thu Oct-21-10 09:30 AM by OneGrassRoot
The general mentality of which we're speaking here knows no regional boundaries any more.

Racism and bigotry aren't relegated to the South, or any region, unfortunately. I've seen the Confederate flag with nasty bumpersticks (a graphic showing someone urinating on a "Kenyan" Obama) on trucks in the Northeast, for example.

This attitude is pervasive throughout the States.

5. I think we need to know the whole context of the remark
before we make a judgement. I am sure he meant it in a loving, race neutral way. Replace race with gay and you are hearing what gay posters hear all the time. I hope the council man who said that gets booted.

6. the old guy says he didn't mean it "in a racial way."
Here's my question. Not being snarky, being serious. Is he just trying to rationalize it and get away with it, or does he honestly not get that he sounded racist in what he said?

8. To me, they don't have a clue...

No, I mean, they REALLY don't have a clue...people like him...like most of the teabaggers.

Somewhere along the way, Rush and Company convinced them that their worldview is not racist. They are so easily brainwashed, and now they believe their own lies.

Of course, in every sense of the words these people are racists and bigots.

Like so many words that have been corrupted by their ilk, they no longer really know what it means.

I would bet money, if I had it, that this man would admit to feeling superior to any person of color, superior to anyone who is not Christian, superior to women, and superior to any ethnicity other than "white."

Yet he would also say, with full conviction, that he's not a racist or a bigot.

9. They're like a boil that has been festering beneath the surface...

of our society since the 60's, restrained from saying what they REALLY feel.

Since the Palin mobs -- and with Obama's Presidency pushing them over the edge into full-fledged insanity -- they're say what they really believe now.

I prefer that...letting all the pus out and removing the infection, exposing it, may lead to healing.

Then again, I realize it may not. But it remaining hidden doesn't feel like a healthy thing for our society either. IMHO. ;)

Of course, Rush & Company have convinced them they're NOT racist, so they believe that themselves now.

10. You are absolutely correct
but you also need to remember that a lot of feelings were suppressed during the cold war including most of the pro worker and pro union sentiments.

19. +100000. It seems a lot of folks are threatened by having power transferred to "the other".
Edited on Thu Oct-21-10 09:45 AM by political_Dem
They are so alarmed that they will do almost anything to "take their country back". After all, can't have those people of color, women, LGBTQI folks and the working class taking over can they? It must be returned to the 1950's! Things were so much better then...

It seems there are examples everyday that transports us back to Jim Crow America.

I hope the Black Councilman slipped an STFU somewhere in there.

18. IMHO, it's rampant everywhere...
I think there is a larger percentage of the population than most people want to admit which is absolutely racist -- with the Tea Party gathering them in unison.

And it's not limited to a geographic region.

The REALLY bad thing is, it's those who deny it exists that allow it to flourish and make the Party of Hate seem bigger than they are.

Silence is consent.

Bullying is bullying. Racism is Racism. Bigotry is Bigotry. Ignorance is Ignorance.

Silence is consent, and I'm standing up against all forms of it as best I can when I see it happening.

Unfortunately, I see it happening a lot.

21. The article is negligent in saying "near Macon..."
This is NOT Macon's city coucil (Macon has race issues too, but still). This is in Warner Robins, GA, a very conservative town that sprung up around the air force base that fuels its economy. It's overrun with fundies, but, unfortunately for them, there are also black folks! OMG!

This is the town I moved away from two years ago, and I haven't looked back for an instant. What a shithole!
