No African-Americans in next U.S. Senate
Despite record election achievements by African-Americans in the House, the United States Senate will not have an African-American in its ranks.
All three black Senate candidates, Kendrick Meek (D-FL), Alvin Greene (D-SC) and Mike Thurmond (D-GA) are projected to lose tonight. The only incumbent black senator, Roland Burris (D-IL), is retiring.

Only six black senators have served: three Republicans and three Democrats, including the future President Barack Obama (D-IL).
There have been 118 voting members of Congress who are African-American. This year the GOP has 14 African-Americans on the ballot, any one of which could become the first black Republican in the house since 2003.
There are 41 African-American Democrats in Congress of which most are running in majority black districts. CNN projects Alabama sent its first African-American woman to Congress tonight with the election of Terri Sewell in the state's 7th district. She is a Democrat.

We are supposed be going forward as a country. We can't afford to go back.

I've said this in another thread, but I hope the lesson for tonight is that tonight's election will galvanize our party to fight in 2012. We've got to truly fight the GOP so that our future is not clouded with restriction, repression and hate. The things that the Republicans stand does not fit America's ideals. The GOP does not want a future.

They want the past back where patriarchy reigns.

17. Some new members (and even a few longer time members) misunderstand
They read the title, think it's bad, and unrec. For example, they think "No black Senators? That's awful!" and unrec. I used to do that when I was new.

20. First you would have to get white people in blue cities to stop cheering "demographic changes".
Edited on Wed Nov-03-10 02:06 AM by Leopolds Ghost
The DLC / Republican / Ruling Classes in big cities strategy to "benefit" the black population is to ethnically cleanse them from city limits on the grounds that the more Blacks they can replace with DINKs, the Bluer and wealthier the city gets.

Oh, and they support the Charter school movement too. Most Americans still seem to believe in school segregation -- don't forget SCOTUS killed Brown v. Board of Ed with no complaint from any politician a few years ago.

As one city councilmember from DC (representing Capitiol Hill) put it, it's about killing the New Deal coalition (blacks and the working class) once and for all and replacing them with wealthy pocketbook liberals who represent "the future of the country". After all, their nannies will all vote same as them when the country is majority underclass like the neocons and neolibs want, right? All those "mobile, multicultural, upwardly mobile young people" who can't afford to live in cities like DC, SF and NY can live somewhere else in some suburban slum, thereby making THOSE areas blue by default.

Those cities are now colonies and/or outposts of the global corporate elite that are no longer dependent on the economy of the surrounding area. Who needs the Black vote when they are no longer welcome to live in city limits?

23. This is a surprise? To who? Also I thought there were only 4 black senators since reconstruction.
Edited on Wed Nov-03-10 11:27 AM by SweetieD
Burris
Obama
Mosley Braun (All top 3 from one state, Illinois)
Brooke

I've always known that it is nearly impossible for blacks to win statewide elections, because like it or not,the majority of states are full of small town/rural, low information, low education, low income whites who harbor a lot of resentment to blacks (and now hispanics). Why because they see us as a threat. In order to win Senate, you have to win over whites like this. It is almost impossible to do in the south, and very improbable still in the north.

25. By pandering to people of their...
...own race in racially-gerrymandered districts, most black house members make themselves unelectable as Senators.

White reps don't run on their race, black reps do....and this is the result.

It sucks, but it is true.
