Harry S Truman had it right. And the voters are resonating his message.
Edited on Wed Nov-03-10 09:43 AM by Hawkeye-X
Harry S Truman said this famous quote:

I've seen it happen time after time. When the Democratic candidate allows himself to be put on the defensive and starts apologizing for the New Deal and the fair Deal, and says he really doesn't believe in them, he is sure to lose. The people don't want a phony Democrat. If it's a choice between a genuine Republican, and a Republican in Democratic clothing, the people will choose the genuine article, every time; that is, they will take a Republican before they will a phony Democrat, and I don't want any phony Democratic candidates in this campaign. - Harry S. Truman, 1952 speaking to a National Convention banquet of the Americans for Democratic Action.

This election, half of the Blue Dogs were voted out. Let's start recruiting the real yellow dog Democrats in your districts. This way, they can show everyone right off the bat that they are the true Dems.

1. Amen

That quote from the incomparable Truman is now 58 years old, but remains just as apt today. How long will it take to learn this lesson?? Yeah, I know, I know - - you'd rather have a majority with Blue Dogs than a minority. LOL - - well, now you don't have that problem to worry about.

Let's focus on districts where we can win with actual Democrats who will help, not hurt, the party's agenda. And the people's.

4. Truman understood what it meant to be a Democrat.
He wasn't a Democrat merely because that was the only party that would have him.

6. I've never really understood what he meant by that
Is he saying the voters really want Republicans in office, and that when Democrats get in, it's because they've managed to fool the voters into thinking they are Republicans? That statement seems to support the Republicans in the oddest way. Like that they are what the voters really want.

9. They'll vote for the real thing instead of a fake.

So give them a real Democrat instead of a DINO as a choice.

12. So they can vote for the real Republican
in that case too.

Why is it so for Republicans and not Democrats? He seems to say the Republicans are the preferred ones.

13. Between a real Republican and a real Democrat there is a clear choice
Between real and ersatz there isn't.

15. Interesting that there are no ersatz Republicans
Though if you talk to some of them, there are, as I've heard them complain about RINOS. Why wouldn't that be the case - say in Maine. Those Senators are called RINOs by some Republicans. Why don't the people in Maine pick real Democrats rather than ersatz ones?

In short, HST's statement is not helpful of anything. It only confirms how far right this country is. It's why we don't have a health care plan like the UK, etc., and it's why we are always in wars. Start with the voters. They are the right wingers.

10. He is saying Democrats like the Centrists of today who are
ready to appease Republicans are fake Democrats. We
call many of them DINOs. Democrats who do not have
some core Democratic Principles which they will not
sacrifice.

19. No, he means people will vote for REAL republicans over PRETEND
ones. And the more we try to be just like them, the more we lose.

The geritol-gulch, I-want-my-country-back, hard right. A liberal Jesus Christ would have lost in Florida.
