Finally a Democratic Governor in California!

Republican governors - 8 years each of republicans Schwarzenegger, Wilson and Dukmejian, and before Brown, 8 yrs. of republican Reagan).

After republican Karl Rove along with ENRON and republican state petitions blaming Davis for the states energy crisis & blackouts after Davis being in office only a bit more than a year).

No way will the republicans get the extremely political savvy & knowledgeable Governor Brown - Who govern our state progressively with jobs & prosperity 30 years ago as Meg Whitman attested.

San Francisco law requires healthier fast food kids meals

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- San Francisco lawmakers have approved legislation they hope will force fast-food chains such as McDonald's to make their children's meals healthier or stop selling them with toys.

The Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday to approve an ordinance that would limit toy giveaways in children's meals that have excessive calories, sodium and fat. It also requires servings of fruits or vegetables with each meal.

The measure drew enough support to overcome an expected veto by Mayor Gavin Newsom. The supervisors are expected to vote again to override the veto.

Supervisors say the law would make San Francisco the first major city to take this action to combat childhood obesity.

--- And folks in the midwest will equate dems with gun grabbers and happy meal grabbers :)

The electoral map of the state isn't very pretty with humongous areas - mostly inland - of red, red, red! The more Dems here caring for this good land, the better here.

I love it when people come here. When I first moved 14years ago, I ran into another East Coast transplant who told me not tell anyone "back there" how much we (my sister and I) love it. Whatever lady, I thought. My dad on his first visit said, "This is where I want to be buried." And now, practically the whole family has moved.

I look forward to seeing you around the board and maybe next spring

109. It is an AMAZING place to live!!! However...
-- what can Jerry and Barbara and the legistlature do (if anything) to ensure that businesses both large and small decide to remain here and not flee the state? After all, it is axiomatic that the only way to maintain a large enough tax base to finance all of the (awesome) state programs we have going on is to maintain a thriving private sector. Cuz once THAT goes, the money dries up, and everything withers and dies. Economics 101.

Bottom line: We need money -- a lot of it -- a steady stream, in fact -- to do all the stuff we need to do if we hope to remain a bright, shining example for the rest of the country.

All of which begs the question, "Where do we get it from?"

82. Chicagoan too. And I love Chicago (well, don't ask me that question in January) but
the one thing that always frustrates me about Chicago is the surrounding area. My friends and family members who live in California can go whenever they want (and do!) to the ocean, the mountains, the desert, wine country, and amazing national parks. Then they can come home to the city and have that cool urban experience. Chicagoans can go to...Lake Michigan, Starved Rock, the Dells, the dunes, Door County. All of which are nice, but not something I'd travel cross county to visit. And not something I find exciting to visit repeatedly. As a city, Chicago is hard to beat, but I sure wish I could pick it up and put it somewhere better (and more temperate).

You can have the Very Hip City and the beautiful outdoors too!

Real estate people got very wise to all that shortly after I lived there, in the mid-seventies...I mean, it was always a LITTLE more expensive I think, but back when I lived there (1970-71)I was able to pay (do you believe it?)$120 a MONTH for a nice studio in Nob Hill..and wages were higher to compensate for the difference...I believe we have the exact opposite situation today.:(

91. My friend wanted to move from LA to San Francisco and interviewed at a company
always rated as a great company for its employees. They offered her the job (a great position) but the salary was no higher than the same kind of position anywhere else in the country. She and her husband would have had to move into a tiny apartment with roommates in order to live there. She had to turn the job down.

94. Oh yes...That is what has been happening for the last couple of decades, I believe
It's hard for many companies to get employees to move there because housing costs are so high.

My SO was offered a job there and I was very enthused about "moving back" he was less so because of the housing costs. When he finally agreed to take the job, we had to turn it down for other reasons (his elderly father was diagnosed with cancer) housing costs were also his concern.

I understand that teachers, nurses and policeman all have a hard time with housing there.

Too bad the big money people got there claws in it...It was PERFECT...and is "near perfect" now, imo.

97. I tried to get my husband to move out there for years but
he's far too practical and always made more money than I did so had more to lose by quitting and moving west. Then the economy just kept getting worse so it became harder and harder to justify. I'd still love to live in the Bay area somewhere but I guess I'd have to win the lottery first. Actually, now that I say that, I think my opinion has changed on that front. If I won the lottery I would move to Hawaii. I fell in love with that state last year when we took our first trip there. I felt like I was home in some weird way. And it wouldn't take much longer to fly to SF than it does from Chicago.

98. Interesting.
My sister-in-law got married in Hawaii, so the SO and I got a chance to go there.

It IS very beautiful, but for me, it's too far from the mainland to feel comfortable actually living there...Nonetheless, it would make an easy place to visit if one lived in California.

As to your feeling a sense of home, there...Yeah..That's how I felt about San Francisco..The "sense of place" some of us have.."The one true place" is an interesting phenomenon on its own.

108. I know what you mean about it's distance from the mainland but the feeling of
being home was so intense when I was there. I never expected it either. We went to celebrate my husband's 40th birthday and I knew I would enjoy it (who wouldn't enjoy Hawaii when it's 10 degrees and snowing back home in Chicago?). However, I've never been much of a beach person. I usually prefer redwood forests or mountains. So I expected to feel like "Okay, great, I've seen Hawaii and it was lovely. Now I can cross that off my list." But within a day or two I was hooked. We ended up going back in June, just six months later. I get the chills when I think about it. I get emotional when I see it on tv. If we have past lives, I'm pretty certain I must have been Hawaiian at some point, the feeling was that strong.

But I wouldn't say no to San Francisco. It's my favorite place on the mainland I'd say for sure.

36. Can't they lower the price of the meal by $0.01 and "charge" +$0.01 for the toy?
That way, it is not "included" with the kids meal but actually "sold" separately.
McDonald's can SELL toys and collectibles... they just can't include them as giveaways.

45. So sell the toy for whatever it costs and drop the price of the meal dually.
Edited on Wed Nov-03-10 02:37 PM by OneTenthofOnePercent
Those toys can't cost more than $0.40 or something

Happy meals are profitable to McDonald's
Basically, the "Actual cost of Meal" + "Actual Cost of Toy" + "Markup" = "Cost of Happy Meal" = Profit
So it stands to reason that "Cost of Happy Meal" - "Cost of included toy" + "Cost of separate toy" = Profit

Basically, they increase the profit margin on the meal alone by cutting out the actual cost of the toy itself and sell the toy at actual cost. As long as "cost of included toy" is equal to "cost of separate toy" and simultaneously greater than or equal to "actual cost of toy" then the result is the same price for a Toy and a Happy Meal. No commodity, individual meal or individual toy, is sold below cost by bundling so there are no legal issues.

If I were a fast food restaraunt... that's precisely what I'd do.
And all it requires is price suffling. No actual menu changes.

And it's funny how a lot of the "crazy" stuff in California is often just the leading edge of nationwide change. I remember being in CA on business in around '97 or '98 when the statewide smoking ban was being debated. A statewide smoking ban?!? Unheard of! Crazy! Those wacky stupid hippie Californians!

Today, not just my state (MN), but Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Nebraska, and Kansas all have statewide universal (bars, restaurants, workplaces) smoking bans. Go figure, us stupid rubes tagged right along.

who sounded the alarm bell over Oreos. Or rather the trans fat used in their delicious cream filling. Oh my but the scorn and ridicule from those fearing a "food police." Lo and behold, the research backed him up. Trans fat could very well be worse than the lard it replaced!

Happy Meals suck. Yes they're better with milk and apples now but you still have that greasy burger or nutrient-absent McNugget (both loaded with salt) as the main course.

No room for red states here! We are TRUE BLUE!!!!

I am particularly overjoyed because the next item on the agenda for all states is the whole redistricting thing. It will be a great relief to have California in Democratic hands when that happens. You've gotta know, if a republi-CON was in charge, he/she would be doing EVERYTHING possible to place their thumb on the scale so that districts would be jerrymandered in favor of more republi-CONS getting elected. You HAVE to know that every GOP operative in the nation is still trying to figure out how to steal California, with our winner-take-all electoral rule and our motherload of delegates and electoral votes.

-- I suppose the overriding question now is (see my post above): "How high can taxes go before they start driving away Industry?" Because remember, No thriving private sector = No damned money in the state coffers. And no damned money in the state coffers = We're fucked.

Anyway, it's just a question I figured I'd throw out there, and one I don't even pretend to know the answer to.

13. Progressive Tax Structure is Next
We will next have a progressive tax structure that will go after the WEALTH, not just INCOME, of millionaires and billionaires. In addition, we will aggressively prevent businesses from arbitrarily closing without paying a SIGNIFICANT PENALTY in doing so. This is key to getting our progressive message on track in California.

62. Hey, all! I'm new to DU...
-- and, after yesterday, a proud Californian! But I do have one question that I would love to get a good answer for since it is the one my butt-scratching Rethuglican father (born and raised in North Carolina, yeee-haww!!!) is bound to be asking in a day or two.

His question will be: Isn't there a good possibility that "a progressive tax structure that will go after the WEALTH, not just INCOME, of millionaires and billionaires" may drive the ones who create the jobs (that is, business owners) OUT of California and therefore weaken its tax base?

I hope to hell the answer is "No." And I hope to hell I can can ram some solid, persuasive reasons down his ugly, pathetic, grits-loving, cigar-chomping, sour-mash drinking, bigoted THROAT!

(Not that he'll listen to Reason anyway...)

Thanks, guys!

85. That is a false argument
IT is a false argument because we can institute retroactivity in the tax code, and actually have the ability to repatriate our common wealth from the billionaires for 3 years after their exit from California. At least, that is what many of our state progressives are coming up with, and it is key that we have the right courts with progressive or at least left of center judges who will listen to challenges to ensure retroactivity happens.

93. Awesome, Ban!
And that sure sounds good to me! (Hope Jerry B. makes it happen!!!!)

But just you watch: My butt-scratching Neanderthal of a Dad is gonna be saying, "Duhhh, what happens AFTER those 3 years are up? Are all those expatriate Gazillionaires gonna just finance your debt indefinitely?" And then he'll probably say that the only long-term answer to California's money woes is by attracting MORE BUSINESS to the state, not less, and the only way of doing THAT is by lowering taxes.

Anybody have a good comeback for that disturbing "insight" (I sure could use it!)

This year, good news in California contrasted with bad news everywhere else.

There's something weird about that state. But congratulations. Brown, Boxer, and Harris (probably) winning is the bit of good news that keeps me sane... and Prop. 23 went down by a huge margin.

Edited on Wed Nov-03-10 02:55 PM by GreenTea
California the most populous state with the largest economy with many national & state parks & wideness areas and miles of protected coastline....(and the CA clean air bill - Prop 23 - stays intact, even though Koch Bros. & oil corporations spent millions of dollars to get rid of it)!

And the most liberal progressive 300 miles of coastal strip perhaps anywhere from Santa Cruz to the Bay Area up to Eureka/Arcata (Humboldt County) along with Los Angeles so goes California - Just look on a election map county by county in CA..... Everywhere else is red in California - As the most liberal 300 miles in the world, is the north coast of CA (where most 60's progressives migrated to, from Santa Cruz, Santa Clara, San Mateo, San Francisco & Bay Area to Marin, Sonoma, Mendocino and Humboldt counties.....The most liberal 300 miles in the world the north coast of CA?

just a few miles inland (where I live), and it goes red. I live in the central valley (I know, I know!) and it might as well be Alabama. I've never been prouder to be a Californian as I was Tuesday, but I never take it for granted. The repubs spent A LOT of money in this state and I think they will continue to.

Those Republican house districts are not the minority in terms of area.

Here in the KC area it seems like Republicans did well by tying local Democrats to the Californian Nancy Pelosi. Kansas is now 100% Republican while as recent as 2006 it was 50% democrat.
