3. I regularly read Reforma in Mexico City and Diario de Yucatan

plus other regional papers when something of note happens there. They seem to be full of the government's glorious victory over the evil drug lords plus celebrity news, a remarkable counterpoint to the sad state of US papers.

Papers in countries farther south are a little more feisty.

4. Well there is a special dynamic with the war on drugs

the press now has only one POV, that is the government. The Drug Lords have kidnapped and killed reporters... so reporters are not telling their side of the story.

It started over 20 years ago... I ran the code on the head of Diaro Zeta in TJ... nothing we really could do... but that scared the press to put it mildly. And now they are starting to go after furiegn reporters too.

If instead they did what the Viet Cong did with US reporters, the Narco Corridos would be more prevalent, like they were early on.
