BAGHDAD - A body recovered by Iraqi police from the Euphrates River south of Baghdad was identified as one of three American soldiers abducted in an ambush claimed by al-Qaida, the military said Thursday.

Opium: Iraq's deadly new export
Farmers in southern Iraq have started to grow opium poppies in their fields for the first time, sparking fears that Iraq might become a serious drugs producer along the lines of Afghanistan… Opium poppies have hitherto not been grown in Iraq and the fact that they are being planted is a measure of the violence in southern Iraq.

Israeli troops round up Hamas lawmakers
NABLUS, West Bank - Israeli troops in the West Bank arrested more than 30 senior Hamas members Thursday, the army said, including a Cabinet minister, legislators and mayors.

Analysts say Sanctions affecting Iran
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - U.S. sanctions against Iran have caused damage to the country's economy, Iranian business leaders and analysts say, even as the U.N. Security Council prepares to consider additional measures to force Iran to curb its nuclear program.

The Nation
Goodling: "I Can't Give You The Whole White House Story"
Well, at least it's clear. When Rep. Sheila Jackson-Lee (D-TX) asked whether the committee needs to go to the White House to get answers about the White House role in the firings, Goodling conceded, "I can't give you the whole White House story."

Goodling Testifies about Gonzales Meeting
During her testimony, Monica Goodling testified about a meeting she had with Alberto Gonzales shortly before she left the department -- their last meeting. Goodling dated the conversation as taking place on a Thursday or Friday the week before she went on leave for the department (March 23rd) -- so on March 14th or 15th. That was just a week after Congress requested to interview Goodling about what she knew.

Leahy: Goodling Testimony "Confirms Our Worst Fears"
Senate Judiciary Chairman Pat Leahy (D-VT) reacts to Goodling's testimony today: “It is curious that yet another senior Justice Department official claims to have limited involvement in compiling the list that led to the firings of several well-performing federal prosecutors. What we have heard today seems to reinforce the mounting evidence that the White House was pulling the strings on this project to target certain prosecutors in different parts of the country.”

GOP slams Pelosi in new ad campaign
House Republicans have a fairly simple plan to reclaim the majority: Blame Nancy. The National Republican Congressional Committee launches its first national advertising blitz Thursday with a drive to tie freshmen Democrats to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. The GOP's cash-strapped campaign arm will launch a mix of radio ads and automated phone calls targeting 18 freshman Democrats for allegedly marching in lockstep with the speaker, a California Democrat who is regularly depicted by Republicans as an out-of-touch liberal.

Cheney daughter gives birth to boy
WASHINGTON - Vice President Dick Cheney's daughter Mary delivered an 8-pound, 6-ounce baby boy on Wednesday, the first child for her and her female partner of 15 years, Heather Poe.

NYC adds post-9/11 death to victims toll
NEW YORK - A woman who died of lung disease five months after Sept. 11 was added Wednesday to the medical examiner's list of attack victims, marking the first time the city has officially linked a death to the toxic dust caused by the World Trade Center's collapse.
And it shouldn’t be the last. Many people are dying from breathing the toxic chemicals. —Caro

Can Dems spin Iraq war cave-in as a victory? (by Joan Walsh, Salon.com)
I'd like Reid to stop pretending he's trying to stop the war right now. And I'd especially like him to stop pretending the bill he's backing is some kind of victory for Democrats. Americans have already "spoken out" on the war. They oppose it. They elected Democrats to end it. Now the Associated Press reports Reid's boast that the compromise legislation would be the first war-funding bill sent to Bush since the U.S. invasion of Iraq "where he won't get a blank check." The president is absolutely getting a blank check, Harry, and Democrats should be honest about it.

Bush Anoints Himself as the Insurer of Constitutional Government in Emergency
With scarcely a mention in the mainstream media, President Bush has ordered up a plan for responding to a catastrophic attack. In a new National Security Presidential Directive, Bush lays out his plans for dealing with a “catastrophic emergency.” Under that plan, he entrusts himself with leading the entire federal government, not just the Executive Branch. And he gives himself the responsibility “for ensuring constitutional government.”

Homer: "Did you know that every day Mexican gays sneak into this country and unplug our brain-dead ladies." Marge: "You have to excuse him. He's been watching a lot of FOX News."

"Daily Show" steers closer to truth than traditional news orgs
Some media observers believe the lesson of "The Daily Show" isn't that reporters should try to be funny, but that they should try to be honest. "Stop being so doggone scared of everything," j-prof Hub Brown advises journalists. "There are people out there who stick out because of their fearlessness. Somebody like Lara Logan at CBS is a great example who is fearless about saying the truth."

McClatchy DC reporters kept off Defense Secretary's plane
They say they're being punished for skeptical pre-war reporting, but a Pentagon spokesman says that's "absurd" and that "there are always more people who would like to travel with the secretary than seats available." McClatchy newsman Jonathan Landay insists: "We are definitely being discriminated against."
And yes, if you dare to report the truth, there are consequences. But what’s the value of being allowed on the plane of someone who constantly lies to you? —Caro

Technology & Science

PLEASANTON, California (Reuters) - Jangl Inc., one of a new class of Web-telephone calling companies, is introducing a way to call over the Internet that bypasses traditional phone networks and uses e-mail to provide privacy from unknown callers.

How to Make Your Cellphone Act Like a BlackBerry

True fixed/cell phone convergence seen years off
AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - It will be years before the much-hyped blending of services that run seamlessly over both fixed and cell phone networks will allow consumers to communicate freely on any device, industry executives say.

Finger Length Predicts SAT Performance
A quick look at the lengths of children's index and ring fingers can be used to predict how well students will perform on SATs, new research claims… Scientists have known that different levels of the hormones testosterone and estrogen in the womb account for the different finger lengths, which are a reflection of areas of the brain that are more highly developed than others, said psychologist Mark Brosnan of the University of Bath, who led the study.

Study: Your Personality Can Change (and Probably Should)
Can a Type-A overachiever become a slacker? How about the guy who can't hold down a job to save his life-could he transform into an adrenaline-pumping go-getter? A leading expert in personality psychology says yes: Personality can change… When children or even adults are taught that abilities and character features can develop and change, they become more resilient to setbacks.

Corn Stalks Engineered to Self-Degrade into Fuel
With gas prices tipping the $3-a-gallon mark, many are looking at other ways to fill the tank. Ethanol made from corn is one promising substitute. Another idea is to use the inedible parts of corn plants-called biomass… But breaking down corn leaves and stalks into usable sugars is expensive. To help reduce costs, Sticklen and her colleagues have genetically tailored corn plants to manufacture the necessary enzymes in their own tissues.

Intel vows to strip lead from processors
Intel says it is stripping out the tiny amount of lead still contained in its chips. Intel has already removed about 95% of the toxic metal since 2004 and will eliminate the remainder 0.02 grams beginning with a new line of chips that go into production later this year.
