Dignity. Trading dignity for "security".
We do not live in elegant times.
There was a time, though, when elegance was much admired.

Though these were the superstars of their day, even ordinary people could maintain some little illusions about themselves in the privacy of their own heads,
that they had their own personal dignity, their own mystery, a certain separateness from the herd.
Those of you who think 'I don't care about some scan, I've got nothing to hide' are free to choose that open attitude if you desire.
But there should be room in our society for permitting each person the dignity to not be treated as part of a herd.

1. Those who trade dignity for security deserve neither
Until we free their minds, they are as much a part of the problem as the screeners themselves.

2. I'm 57 and can remember a time when airline travel
was a dress up occasion.

Passengers were treated with dignity and respect. The food wasn't gourmet, but a meal and drinks were routinely served, magazines and newspapers were available, and movies/music were included in the cost of a ticket. There was no fee to check a couple of piece of luggage either. The airlines did everything they could to try to provide the traveler with a pleasant experience.

Today people are groped or x-rayed and generally humiliated and treated like criminals even before reaching the gate. Then, unless they are traveling first class, they are herded aboard an aircraft with way too many seats jammed together. For the next several hours they can consider themselves lucky to get a soft drink. If they want to check luggage, they pay extra. If they want to see a movie, they pay extra. If they are starving and forgot to bring a sandwich, they pay extra. It won't be long before the bathrooms aboard require a credit card for entry. It's coming.

It's sad and disturbing to see how far we've fallen as a country and how much dignity and self-respect people have lost. I hope people continue to speak out and fight like hell before they physically strip us down and tell us to bend over. We're not very far from that next step.
