There's something a bit hypocritical about those complaining about China manipulating its currency.

I will start by saying I am SURE that China probably does unfairly manipulate it's currency to stay ahead and it probably does hurt the US and other western countries quite a lot. I also AGREE that China probably should fix this. But the hypocritical part that I never like to hear is when I hear right wing commentators arguing about this from a moral standpoint. That is that the US is essentially better than that. I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that if the tables were turned and it was the US benefiting from an unfair currency policy that they would tell China to shove it when they complained. We really need to get off our asses an innovate ourselves towards a solution to our economic troubles. Sure China shares some blame but then we helped created China and can hardly complain when they get a taste of the "first world" pie and want some more. Instead how about turning our heads inwards to look at some of our own disgraceful policies. China is spending HUGE sums on education, infrastructure, and R&D. Maybe we should follow suit instead of just pouring more good money after bad (hello military anyone?).

1. China gets away with currency manipulation because their corporate customers profit from it.
The giant multinational corporations effectively set the price of the goods manufactured by Chinese companies. If Chinese companies don't meet the price levels set by the giant corporations that buy huge quantities of goods from them, then the corporations will buy from factories in other low wage countries such as India.

China manipulates its currency in order to compete with producers in low wage countries such as India, not with businesses located in the U.S.

2. There's no comparison. Like comparing a fender bender and a fatality wreck.
