Skelton bids farewell to the House: “Some work of noble note, may yet be done”

Rep. Ike Skelton left little doubt today that he was among a vanishing breed of old-school lawmakers.

In his farewell address to the House chamber, where he has served for nearly four decades, he quoted Tennyson and even Cicero, who practiced the arts of policy and politics more than 2,000 years ago.

“Gratitude is the greatest of all virtues,” Skelton said, quoting the Roman lawmaker and philosopher, “and I am grateful to so many people.”

Skelton was swept away in the Republican tide that swamped the midterm elections. He was among several powerful Democratic warhorses whose careers came to an unanticipated end. Skelton has toiled under six presidents. He’s witnessed a cavalcade of modern history, from the rise of women rights to the humiliation and near downfall of a president.
