FR: "Get back to original criteria for voting: male, white property owners"
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2635848/posts

Possibly the most racist & sexist thread on FR, ever, which is really saying something! And also most ignorant:

"We are a Republic... not a democracy... but they are turning it into a democracy... and democracies fail... as soon as the leaches figure out that they can vote themselves a living off the backs of indentured tax payers."

HEY FREEPERS YOU GRADUATES OF GLENN BECK U -- DEMOCRACY MEANS PEOPLE VOTE, IT CAN BE A DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC, A DEMOCRATIC KINGDOM, IT'S NOT EITHER/OR YOU DUMBASSES!

God forbid if any of the taxes we pay actually go to the general welfare as per the CONSTITUTION....and not funneled UP to the corporate rich so they can trickle down on us! Fascists...

2. I think those clowns should move to Somalia..
there they can have all the fascism their cold dead hearts desire.

Their failure to see how society actually works, and why taxes are necessary, is clearly due to their lack of a proper education and their blind devotion to Faux and Frauds.

is do you have a mortgage? If they do they can not vote under that plan, because they do not own their land the bank does.

7. And what DOESN'T fail, by their standards?
That's a good question....I'd love to know if there's one country in the world doing it "right" by Freeper standards, which are like, turn back the clock 3 centuries.

Would love to send them in a time machine back to the wonderful pre-civil war US they think is so wonderful. Idiots.

26. There is a Maryland Case from the early 1700s involving Woman right to vote
Maryland's court ruled they could not and the Woman then moved to Pennsylvania where she could vote since she owned her property outright and was NOT married. Thus Women could vote before the revolution, but only if they meant the property restrictions and were not married. Do the the pressure of the French and Indian War and the Revolution, by the time the Constitution had been adopted property as the main means to determine who could vote was out of favor, militia membership became the rule (Through there had always been an overlap between to two "Traditions" going back to the founding of the Colonies AND that overlap continued till almost all white males had the vote by 1800 in most states, with all by South Carolina giving all white males the right to vote by the Civil War, South Carolina has some weird rules as who could vote, thus when Reconstruction occurred South Carolina ended up with a African American Dominated State Legislature, but that is another story).

14. You are correct about the Democracy/Republic question
A republic is simply a specific type of democracy. So for them to say this country is a republic, not a democracy is like someone saying their car is a Corolla, not a Toyota.

And with regard to their claim that "democracies fail" and their insinuation that republics don't, someone should ask them what the "R" in "USSR" stands for (just for fun, of course).

27. In fact, The Founders spent a lot of time agonizing over the fact that republics DO fail...
Two excellent works on this are:

The Ideological Origins of the American Revolution by Bernard Bailyn

and

The Elusive Republic: Political Economy in Jeffersonian America by Drew McCoy <1980>

You may have read them already; both are worth a read.

18. Perhaps only states who aren't on the government dole should be allowed to vote.
You know, those states that pay more in taxes than they receive in government benefits? That way, only 2 or 3 red states would be allowed to vote while just about all the blue states would be allowed to vote. That seems to be what many on that site are advocating, even though they don't know it.

23. I actually waded into this cesspool to read the first few posts
I usually ignore DU posts about FR threads, but this just sounded too good.

My favorite:

"The Founding Fathers also never imagined that they would beget a country in which 1/3 of the adult population does no work"

No, they just imagined that they'd beget a country in which 100% of the black population did all the work, for no money.

28. I see little on the thread that suggests what the OP says
Beyond one big fat racist photo suggesting that Afro-Americans are a mob rather than people, there's a lot about limiting the franchise to property owners but not a lot about anything else.

Make no mistake, I have a big, big problem with just that much. True, this is a republic rather than a democracy, but that is a deficiency we shall remedy. I don't know what these FReaks are worried about. A system of government that allows a class of wealthy, powerful interests to have an influence way out of proportion to its numbers is not a democracy. Where does the OP on FR get off saying "all democracies fail"? There has never been a real democracy in the history of mankind. How would the OP at the FReak Show know? It would be easier to say that "all empires fail".

With the "mob blacks" who have a "steak" in the gubmint, and also a lot of lamenting about women getting the vote. Yes, there is a lot of racism and sexism on that thread and also many who have a problem with anybody but "conservatives" getting to vote AT ALL....

There's a lot of "well what about the CONSERVATIVES who rent?" Really what they want is a convervo-fascist totalitarian state. Now wouldn't THAT be fun. They're really quite insane!

43. Oh, I still READ Free Republic on occasion...
From a "know thy enemy" perspective alone, it's a good idea to always keep tabs on what your political opponents are doing. I've been a regular viewer of FR since the late 90's for that exact reason.

What I don't get are people who are shocked about what they read there. I long ago lost ANY capability to be shocked by ANYTHING posted there. You have to visit Stormfront to find anything worse on the Internet. FR is an echo chamber of some of the most extreme, out of touch members of the right wing. Even for Republican's, they're on the right fringe.

Getting mad at Freepers for saying stupid crap is like getting mad at a dog for barking. What's the point?

42. I like this one:
Limiting the vote to stakeholders is a very good idea which does need to be revisited. But instead of property owners, why not instead limit it to net taxpayers who are not on any form of government assistance? There are many high income taxpayers who rent their primary residences, why should they be denied suffrage when they pay a large share of the bills?

The other problem with allowing only property owners to vote is it gives more of a voice to those rich liberals who want everyone to pay more in taxes because it tends to screw everyone else but themselves.

If they have a mortgage (and consider that as ownership, even if the bank actually "owns" it), chances are they are using government assistance with either the loan or the deduction it nets.

Dumbasses!
