NPR this morning - had a segment on Obama's habit of rolling over to the GOP
Negotiation experts are puzzled. Obama holds press conferences to announce stuff like expanding ocean drilling with the GOP having given up nothing. Dropping the public option from the health care bill was another example.

1. Piss poor negotiation experts, if ya ask me.
They can't even tell the difference between a negotiation and a handout to needy corporations.

2. Theory was that Obama has never held a leadership position that calls for negotiation
like being a house whip or something like that.

in the abilities that he did not have? Or did he choose to ignore those that offered advice to the contrary.

4. Literally stomach turning....and it has been from about day 10.
It would seem that the administration's rules for negotiating start with: First, give them everything they want.

10. It's at the point where the journallists at the press conferences ask about it
They played a clip of Obama's spokeperson being questioned after one of Obama's "rollover and give the GOP everything" speeches.

22. I doubt they'll snap out of it
Apparently Obama didn't learn anything from the November elections. His response has to been to redouble efforts to 'reach out to Republicans in the spirit of bipartisanship'. Yeah, that's been working so well for him.

18. he's NOT negotiating.
if one were to take him to be a liberal negotiating, then yes, you would find his actions confusion or incompetent.
but that's not his game.

i think he wants to get as much progressive stuff done as possible WITHOUT BEING LABELED A PROGRESSIVE. given the massive influence of right-wingers and right-wing money on washington, he views being labeled as a progressive is political suicide. for this reason, he and his minions go out of their way to smack liberals down and to concede away liberal objectives without and obvious return. essentially, what they get is shoring up their non-liberal cred with the money in washington.

needless to say, this is hardly a recipe for dramatic moves to the left. it's a recipe for extremely slow incrementalism at best.

23. it's an explanation, not a justification.
i'd much prefer a strong liberal with a backbone fighting for us, but kucinich dropped out early.

besides, the problems for liberals run far deeper than any one man. we all put FAR too much emphasis on the one person in the oval office, when the powers of money in washington are so much stronger. ultimately, until we reverse that problem, we'll never prevail in any meaningful way.

26. um, remember that election in 2008? The people wanted CHANGE and the wanted PROGRESSIVES
to give it to them. The "being labeled as a liberal or progressive is political suicide" line you're spewing is nonsense. Being labeled a republican is so bad now that many repug candidates in Florida during the midterms didn't put their party affiliation on their signs or ads. There are more Liberals than conservatives in America, but politicians don't give them a reason to vote. Obama is pushing Right wing legislation because he's a right Winger. There's nothing Progressive about anything he has done or will do.
