(Yeah, I'm ready to get hated on...)
I don't mean physically, which I could do, I mean philosophically.
Do I reserve my heart for our soldier wounded in the line of battle, or the Iraqis and Afghans who have been shelled to hell and back.
For every one of our soldiers killed, about a hundred innocent and foreign people have died.
My heart goes out to all, I do not hate American soldiers, but I DO despise the thoughtlessness that allows such activities to continue.
I personally drove down to Austin, Texas with my MMA instructor and helped him to teach veterans hand-to-hand combat. I was in Austin, which is essentially the liberal outpost deep in conservative territory.
My host, who was a vet, was very gracious and welcoming, warm and understanding besides. Several times he referred to the people in Iraq as "Hadjis" which most of us know is an ethnic slur against people of muslim faith. He was not the problem, but merely a symptom.
He actually quit the military a few years away from his pension and for that I respect him. He lives in a culdesac with a family, works for Dell, and writes for Kung-Fu/Tai-Chi magazine. Has a master rank in Tae Kwon Do, which I witnessed him receiving.
Anyway, my point is, they made a decision, and they live with the consequences.
Should another Hitler crop-up, I will be on the front-lines advocating for our military, fighting for it, etc. Till then, it is all bully foreign policy to me. Real patriots should stand against such things. Fortunately this vet did not lose limbs over this.
I really do feel for the guy, but I also wonder, if he would call these people hadjis in front of us notherners, what might he do in our absence?
It is really a shame. I wish I could be rooting for our military, but my conscience will not allow it.
I wish all people who are working to preserve lives the best.
