How do they raise funding?

I have a proof of concept project that I someday would like to move forward with, but it will take some funding to get it off the ground.

How did other projects get their seed? How did DU get started? MediaMatters? Wikileaks?

I'm a simple software guy not a funding guy. How do I go about raising funds that will let me put this out there?

3. if you could make money in the venture, go find someone to front you some

and convince them that they can make money in the long run

if not, put the product out and ask for donations after the fact
