Boehner says GOP to lead on extending tax cuts
By STEPHEN OHLEMACHER, Associated Press

WASHINGTON – With unemployment rising, incoming House Speaker John Boehner vowed Friday that Republicans will show the way toward extending tax cuts in 2011 if the outgoing Democrats fail to do it sooner.

Boehner, R-Ohio, made his comment as partisan wrangling in the Senate slowed attempts to pass legislation ensuring that tax cuts enacted in 2001 and 2003 don't expire.

The White House has signaled that President Barack Obama is prepared to sign a bill extending tax cuts at all levels, as Republicans want. At the same time, Democrats want the bill to include an extension of unemployment benefits for the long-term unemployed, renewal of tax provisions benefiting college students, companies that hire the jobless and lower- and middle-income workers, even if they don't make enough to pay federal taxes...

But Senate Democrats, who propose allowing tax cuts to lapse for the upper income, accused Republicans of favoring millionaires and billionaires at the expense of the middle class. At a news conference, Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., directed her remarks to tea party-aligned voters who sided with the GOP this fall. Republicans "are not concerned about the people in the tea party," she said. "They're worried about people who can't decide which home to go to" for the holidays...

1. How quickly Boner forgets he just voted against a House bill to extend tax cuts.
But it didn't include the richest 10%, who are the only people he cares about.

it's the same spin about "signaling" that is being rehashed over and over.

5. God, I hope not. I understand that it's vitally important to ensure those on
unemployment get an extension, but can't something be done without having to give in on this?

It's not just that it's letting them call the shots again, it's also fiscally stupid.

6. He wants to extend something that was horrible in the beginning...
and is even more horrible now. Johnny doesn't need to be wasting his time "extending" the taxcuts for the top 2 or 3 percent, he should be more concerned about the 97% he is keeping from getting their taxes cut.

But, he has to play the role of the good Republican leader and walk the plank on taxcuts for millionaires and billionaires, even though he knows we cannot afford them.

The media will continue to report on this issue as if it were a sporting event. One side scores. Then the other side scores. They don't want to take sides and call one side the truth and one side a bald-faced lie. That would not be prudent.

......sin a min a aye co tay........

8. All it takes is 41 Democrats...
Sadly, we are in the position where what we can hope for is a minority of Democrats to block atrocious legislation.

9. Boner Is Yanking His Chicken...
This is called "brinksmanship"...and someone should get a Webster's dictionary with that page opened to the White House ASAP.

The rushpublicans want those tax cuts for the rich so bad they can taste them. It's also making them lots of money as lobbyist money is flowing their way right now. This is all about power...in its most base sense. And it's bullying. But Boner knows he can get away with it.

Obama has boxed himself in as he is hellbent on getting some tax deal done and is afraid, as are other Democrats, that if these cuts lapse the GOTB will flood the airwaves with "they rose taxes" in 2012. They will cave to some kind of deal...and I'm still putting my tax money on an extention to kick this can down the road (a rushpublican victory). The unemployed will hang...and I expect they'll get a bone...maybe a three month extention and we'll be back circle-jerking these issues again.
