Poll question: What If The Republicans Tie Extending All The Bush * Tax Cuts To Extending Unemployment Benefits ?
I just don' t see how we can end unemployment insurance benefits in the face of the worst economy in nearly one hundred years and consign over ten million of our fellow Americans to poverty, begging, homelessness, and despair.

As Nietzsche said “Battle not with monsters lest you become one.”

5. Well
Then the folks who will allow the unemployment benefits to lapse for whatever reason should take an unemployed/homeless person/family in...

6. So the repukes will end up with what they want....again....
Why wasn't it the Dems who setup a situation whereby the repukes have to vote for something we want in order to get what they want..instead of it ALWAYS being the other way around.

2. I think you have to call their bluff. What is going to benefit those who are getting hurt from all
of this is the dems taking a stand, drawing a line in the sand, whatever you want to call it but going to this fight and stand up to these asses. Somewhere you have to do it or you are always going to find yourself in these kind of situations.

3. I think that's the plan. If Dems don't go along, the failure of
both issues will be painted as the Dems' fault. Bank on it.

8. Probably, but you would think the dems could figure out how to explain this somewhere. You have
the American people who in a majority agree about the tax cuts should be for the middle class, not the upper 2%. A majority agree that the unemployment benefits need to be extended.

4. We should always be the side that blinks first.
It is the right thing to do.
Plus it endears us to the other side. Soon they will stop hating us so much, and then, finally, the beatings will stop.

25. No of course not. We blink first and concede everything.
This has been working so well for us as a strategy. By all means let us continue along the same path.

9. think about what a horrible bit of
negotiating this is. With high unemployment, unemployment insurance has always been extended but these guys only needed to say no, not this time, and use it as a bargaining chip to get everything they want. The dems are the weakest imaginable negotiators of all time.

10. Put up a hell of a fight,
making it clear to EVERYONE that the Reptilians are holding up needed relief for the unemployed in order to bring home tax favors for their rich buddies. Then, declaring your opposition to the tax cuts for the rich, sign the bill if that's the only way you can get the unemployment extension through, but only after again making it clear that you disagree with the tax breaks for the wealthy but are doing it because it is the only way you have available to help the unemployed.

what do you think this was all about. And I'll raise you one...they have tied it to freeing up investment money and job creation. I've been saying this for nearly a year right now. We are being extorted.

21. It's tempting to play chicken with them--
though it would have worked better if we'd done it BEFORE the election.

That failing, why not work a deal where we take advantage of the "small business" meme Republicans are using--tie any tax cuts on the higher amounts to actual creation of new jobs..... ? If you actually create ____ (depending on income) new jobs, you get the tax break; otherwise you don't.

But since I don't expect either of these to happen: if the whole package passes, THEN work like hell to see how many fat cats have done illegal financial manipulations, and fine them to get the money back. This wouldn't have to rely on Congress to carry through.

WAAAH WAAAH!! NO NO!!! WAAAH WAAAH!! NO, NO CAKE FOR GAYS AND BROWN PEOPLE!!!

A few smart Dems know this, like Rep. Grayson. I wish the rest would watch, listen, and then follow his lead.

26. Democrats Have No Spine...
While I'm glad they took this vote...it was too little too late. They should have done this in September...instead they're about to cave...give in to a two year extention of the cuts...punt the ball into the next election. Meanwhile the GOTB will hit the airwaves early and often and blame the Democrats of raising everyone's taxes. Watch the Democrats scramble to make any type of deal next week...and come away with nothing.
