Who provides the best news coverage?
I thought I would start a thread about who people look to for news. I always think this is important because it often shapes the way one looks at the world.

With that being said, for my money I would say the best weekly news source is The Economist. It provides a much more meatier analysis of the weekly news than you will find anywhere else.

1. DU, because people like you share stories and articles from various sources. If it
weren't for DU I doubt I'd ever read anything from AlJaz English, Reuters, BBC, etc. It's all pretty much complied here.

So thank you all! :hi:

2. I use two sources - DU, then perhaps jump to TPM -
But DU members are so well connected into breaking/relevant news that it is a one stop shop.

3. Don't you think that is dangerous?
If you get all your news from liberal sources, it doesn't force you to think.

11. I am surrounded by conservatives/republicans - neighbors, a few friends
and family members. That tells me all I wish to/need to know - once the right wing is less unhinged/extreme, maybe I will "venture" there again. Right now, for better or worse, it appears to me that the correct answers for America and its people lie on the left

13. Most conservatives offer no depth or understanding..
That way I think it is important to read good arguments and news on both sides. I challenge you to pick up a copy of The Economist. I think you will be surprised with the depth found in the pages of the magazine.

8. Most blogs and internet sites just repeat info someone else investigated
Edited on Sat Dec-04-10 02:14 PM by stray cat
so it pays to have real investigations and go directly to real sources and not just parrot one sources talking points

10. this should be interesting...
crickets sound so bored, ever notice?
(for those not adept at reading sarcastic imputs, i'm saying there probably isn't a mainstream news organ which covers the "what's new, pardner?" beat anymore, since to do so might entail telling the truth; which would then expose at least 200 thousand richenpowerful persons- media, biz, gov, academic- involved in the overthrow of liberal democracy by 'mister pig' since the JFK murder in 1963 to potential justice and thus death penalty ...the pigs have tripped over themselves setting up Ponzi/blackmail schemes, almost too much for them to keep track of, and soon sarah palin, a rightwing stooge who thinks jesus needs a haircut and nicer suit, is set to brecome US president in 2012- which horrifies even hard rightwing stooges!)
I mean, c'mon... sarah palin

12. I go to a lot of sources, not all of them are good though
Edited on Sat Dec-04-10 02:27 PM by RZM
NPR, BBC, Economist, NY Times, AP are my most common sources. I do scan all three cable news networks, though they aren't as good except for breaking news, since they can get it out first. There are a myriad of other places I go to as well, though less frequently.

I highly recommend this site:

http://www.aldaily.com/

It's not really a news site, but rather a great resource for analysis and commentary on many subjects. It's run by the Chronicle of Higher Education, so it's geared toward the egghead set, but it's a great site to keep on your radar (actually it's my homepage). Their links bar on the left side of the page is a great resource in and of itself.

But UK Guardian also has some good stories, and The New Yorker for more in-depth work -- in addition to the sources others have mentioned.

21. RT actually stands for 'Russia Today'
And it's funded by the Kremlin. It's little more than propaganda for an authoritarian regime.

One of my preferred money people.

Always interesting to see how other countries see the USA.

This site provides just that view:

26. They carry Thom Hartmann too
And neither should be commended for their association with an authoritarian government that inhibits democracy and freedom of the press in its own country. I'd like to see both of them take the Russian government to task on-air for its crackdowns on political and press freedoms. Until they do that, I can only draw the conclusion that they are Kremlin shills. To criticize the US government but give Russia a pass on the same types of issues is rank hypocrisy. To do so while on the Kremlin payroll simply shows that both can be bought.

I agree that it's valuable to understand how other countries see the USA, though in this case, RT is perhaps better described of an example of how the Russian government WANTS people to see the USA. Sadly, given the dearth of independent news options on Russian television, the government view is only going to become more and more accepted there.
