Obama on Bush tax cuts: 'It will require some compromise'

President Obama said today he will continue to work with Republicans to resolve their dispute over current income tax rates that expire at the end of the year, and indicated he is willing to compromise.

"It is absolutely essential -- to our hardworking middle-class families and to our economy -- to make sure that their taxes don't go up on January 1st," Obama told reporters.

The president criticized Senate Republicans for striking down a plan that would have extended the George W. Bush-era tax cuts for only the middle class, but added that "today's votes cannot be the end of the discussion."

"We need to redouble our efforts to resolve this impasse -- in the next few days," Obama said. "It will require some compromise, but I'm confident that we can get it done."...

1. Of course, it's interesting how
Keeping Bush's tax cuts for 98% of people isn't considered a compromise.

3. No kidding! These days "a compromise" means Republicans get 100% of what they want. nt

5. Mr. Obama----No "Compromise" on these Tax Cuts!!! Period.
There should be no compromise on any of these GOP-Bush era desired tax cuts. Once these tax cuts expire, no more negotiating to continue it, President Obama.

Any type of "compromise" to allow any extension of these Bush era tax cuts is CAVING IN to GOP Pressure or otherwise, Mr. Obama - you and the Democratic Party may as well change your affiliation to the Republican Party and be done with it!

By the way, Mr. President, enshrined in GOP political doctrine is the notion that any "compromise shows and demonstrates weakness."

So, when you Democrats "compromise" with the GOP, they will still try to cut out your private parts and will not play "nice" no matter what.

The Democratic Party has learned nothing from the Bush era when these GOPers rammed everything through! Pathetic. Compromise my ass!

8. Obama should veto any tax bill with the tax cuts for the upper 2%
Seriously. Veto the damn thing. If the Republicans want to play this bullshit game, call them on it.

If there's a bill that leaves Congress with tax cuts with the ultra wealthy, veto the fucking thing. The tax cuts for us peasants aren't that much, compared to what the richies will get.

9. Step one: Try to pass the middle class tax cuts with out the top 2% tax cuts.
Step two: The Republicans strike it down.

Step three: Hold a press conference saying the Republicans struck down the middle class tax cuts. "Why are Republicans against lowering the middle class tax burden?"

Step four: The Republicans say, "We want tax cuts for everybody, but those darn Democrats are engaging in class warfare!"

Step five: The Democrats say, "The tax cuts for the elite will cost the US a lot of money, what should we cut in order to pay for them."

Step six: The Republicans say, "There is a war on Christmas and there are gay people walking about!"

Step seven: The Dems try again. "Why are the Republicans still striking down the middle class tax cuts?!"

12. Our economy is corrupt. Tax cuts, including those for the MC, are THEIR carrot in their GAME.
Get in the driver's seat on deficit reduction, by letting ALL of the Bush Tax Cuts sunset AS ALL OF THEM AGREED. Reap the political benefit of common cause with the Republican's own splintered base, i.e. anti-deficit grassroots Medicare recipients.

13. If anyone is looking for compromise, then Obama is exactly the right man from whom to get it.
Over and over and over again. Happily.

15. requiring some compromise should not mean.
here, let me put it in for you.

Let the damn tax cuts expire then introduce new tax cuts for the lower income citizens.

With that I agree

17. No, you (and I) voted for someone who's a Corporatist first and foremost.
Essentially all Republicans and many Democrats are really
members of *THAT* party and are neither Democrats nor
Republicans.
