1. Learned it from my mom...
...an old Henry Wallace social democrat.

Another great one is Bandiera Rossa, the Italian Socialist march. You may have seen the miners in Matewan march out on strike to it.

Avanti, populo, a la riscossa!
Bandiera rossa, bandiera rossa...

16. I picked up on that song instantly, but the "Viva la Socialismo et Liberti" part
Edited on Sun Dec-05-10 06:10 PM by pnorman
apparently ended up on the cutting room floor!

BTW: The DVD of that title is well worth purchasing.

Product Description
THE INTERNATIONALE tells the story of a legendary song written in 1871, after the brutal suppression of the Paris Commune, that was soon to be translated and sung in over a hundred languages throughout the world, and become a rallying cry for all the oppressed and exploited people of the world to rise up and overthrow their masters. It takes us on a journey around the world and throughout history - from the Paris Commune to the Soviet Union, from Jamaica to Tiananmen Square - bringing to life the stories of people who have been touched by this emotionally-charged song.

Featuring rare archival footage and performances and interviews with Billy Bragg, Pete Seeger, and others, THE INTERNATIONALE explores the importance of ideals, the fate of the left, and the power of music as a force for change.

WINNER! BEST SHORT DOCUMENTARY WOODSTOCK INT'L FILM FESTIVAL

On edit, I think I'll dig out that DVD and watch it again later today. My soul is in sore need of stirring!

17. They were fascinating
Uncle but my aunt's husband - he was Jesuit trained and a genius at philosophy -became a Marxist in the late 40s. Ran from the Caribbean to England - their home was one of the centres of amazing discussions with the Caribbean's cultural icons, the Marxists and Fabian socialists.

When I think about it I really have had a great life - in the Caribbean in the US, and in England. I met most of the leftists and liberals.

12. That tune has too much Nationalistic Fervor
If the workers of the world truly unite, there will be no need for nationalism.

We're all the same species, after all.

26. "too much Nationalist fervor..." You got that right!
The National Anthem of the Soviet Union or the State Anthem of the USSR (or Hymn, Russian: Государственный гимн СССР, Gosudarstvenniy Gimn SSSR) was introduced during World War II on March 15, 1944, replacing The Internationale as the official national anthem. The lyrics were written by Sergey Mikhalkov (1913–2009) in collaboration with Gabriel El-Registan (1899–1945) and the music was composed by Alexander Alexandrov (1883–1946). It was believed that Soviet soldiers would respond more to an anthem that was dedicated only to the Soviet Union rather than to a worldwide movement. The song was originally written as the Anthem of the Bolshevik Party with lyrics in the Alexandrine meter by Vasily Lebedev-Kumach in 1939.

Stalin was originally mentioned in the lyrics; however, after his death in 1953 and the process of Destalinization, the lyrics referring to Stalin were unacceptable. From that time until 1977, the anthem was played without lyrics. Revised lyrics without the references to Stalin and World War II were approved in 1977.

Those "Heroes Of Labor" probably had more fundamental problems with "The Interationale". They must have felt directly THREATENED by it!

But as a Christian pacifist, I don't try to sing it very often

15. Stand up, all victims of oppression...

For the tyrants fear your might
Don't cling so hard to your possessions
For you have nothing, if you have no rights
Let racist ignorance be ended
For respect makes the empires fall
Freedom is merely privilege extended
Unless enjoyed by one and all

What's not to like?

18. I was forced to sing it when I was little
It's a nice song, but to me it represents oppression, dictatorship, and human rights abuses. I guess it all depends on where one was raised, and what one experienced. I had the misfortune of living in a communist country.
