none of the former Tull members were still playing with him -- but what a FANTASTIC show! Luckily got 2nd row center seats and was able to watch him closely. The man is amazing, just for the fact that he engages his audience with direct eye contact constantly all across the rows, all throughout the show.
Well, to me that was amazing. I guess when I think of rock stars, even older ones, I think of people at least somewhat full of themselves Perhaps with some justification; after all, the artist is famous and talented and the audience can simply be a sea of anonymous, non-important --after they paid their ticket price of course-- faces. Also, the artist(s) is/are paid to perform, not necessarily be concerned, caring or interested friend(s)...
However his concert tee shirts were $30! I wasn't too happy, especially as my ticket cost just $49.50! But I bought one of course -- how can one resist Ian Anderson in full color (with that long, gorgeous, curly hair! Nowadays he wears a scully) standing in his inimitable way? Which, BTW, I understand he began doing that to hold the mic stand close enough to him -- and the rest is history.
But strangely at least a couple other past famous flautists also stood upon one leg! No idea why -- couldn't have been for better access to a microphone stand!
Oh, another couple tidbits I recently learned is that he was playing guitar & mandolin in his early bands, and as he wasn't getting the sound he envisioned put them down, picked up the flute and within a few months was completely self-taught and (IMHO) awesome! Also, the name 'Jethro Tull', named after a 17th century English agrarian, was one of the many early names the band called themselves. They would change their name constantly because they wanted to --and did-- fool club owners into hiring them again because they weren't ever popular enough (to put it nicely : ) to be asked back a second time.
The first time they were invited back to the same club to play, they were then named Jethro Tull
and so the rest is moar history :D
Sorry if you knew any of this -- don't mean to bore you I just found it all so fascinating :)
