Look, it's really very simple...
Everyone seems to be "desperate to decipher the baffling Obama presidency." It's no big mystery. After he was elected, he was sat down and shown this video:

Unlike Bush and CHeney who appeared only in handpicked audiences, Obama makes himself available to the public. You might think it is cute, I think it is in bad taste. But, everyone has an opinion.

and it has nothing to do with crowds.

"Mr. President? Don't go against the Corporatist agenda. This is what will happen."

The man is balancing the fact that he has a gun to his head with a world of other considerations. It's not all that baffling.
