The Democrats came to a cross in the road and they took the wrong turn. On the taxcuts, they may have lost their majority for many, many years. They were badly out-maneuvered in the negotiations. As donco pointed out in another post, unemployment benefits should never, ever, have been a part of the negotiations, just as the Defense budget should not be part of a tax bill negotiation.
The Democrats got their asses handed to them, big time. And they got stepped on as the jackboots left the negotiating room. It's a sad sight to see.
But...but...but..what about the unemployed? What about 'em? Assistance for the unemployed should never have been included in a taxcut bill. The Republicans should have been put on the spot daily until they agreed to help these folks.
There is still time for Nancy Pelosi and the House to prevent this travesty, if they haven't already been arm-twisted by Biden and the White House. But I don't hold out a lot of hope.
The Democratic Party may have assured themselves the minority for a long, long time. Why? Because there are many Democrats that will refuse to vote for a bunch of dangerous wimps. As Bill Clinton once said, sometimes "it is better to be wrong and strong than weak and right."
