"Elizabeth Edwards seriously ill"
Elizabeth Edwards seriously ill

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Elizabeth Edwards' cancer has spread, and her health has deteriorated, multiple sources told WRAL News Monday.

Edwards, 61, the wife of former Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, was briefly hospitalized recently, but she is now at home, and her family and friends are lending their support.

She was first diagnosed with cancer in the final weeks of the 2004 presidential campaign, when her husband, who was at the time a U.S. senator from North Carolina, was the Democratic nominee for vice president. The couple didn't disclose her illness until after the election.

The cancer went into remission after months of treatment, but it resurfaced in early 2007, as John Edwards was mounting a second run at the White House. The Edwardses agreed at the time that they wouldn't allow the cancer to derail his candidacy.

Because the cancer had moved into her bones in 2007, her doctors said at that time that it was no longer curable but could be treated.

She's surrounded by people who love her and care about her, as I'm sure john still does - in his own bent way.

Just really sad, especially at this time of year.

If by any chance she sees or hears about this from someone else - Elizabeth, know that you're loved by us also. Perhaps you've done all your Purgatory time here on earth already.

She has been hurt in so many ways. May her days be as comfortable and peaceful as possible.

And to think, Dick Cheney is still with us. Life ain't fair.

I also know some have not forgiven Elisabeth for "protecting" JE's presidential bid despite the scandal. I have. Be free of pain, Elisabeth and be at peace. I remember when you posted here. If by chance you still do, I extend much love to you.

My sister had breast cancer which ended up going into her bones, and then finally her brain. She passed away last year after fighting her cancer for almost 10 years. I wish Elizabeth all the best and hope she can stay as pain free as possible. It's not an easy thing to endure.

77. Actually Monique, bone mets can be quite treatable. It's when it spreads to soft tissue that it
gets more dicey.

Zometa (like Boniva) given in higher doses by IV has been found to actually help with bone mets. They just started using this a couple of years ago, also a new drug called Eribulin has been okayed for use NOW.

It gives me hope!

60. Saw her not that long ago and she seemed much as always
Edited on Mon Dec-06-10 05:29 PM by unc70
Maybe six weeks ago at dinner, she had been visiting at a nearby table, and we spoke briefly before she rejoined her group to be seated. She looked and seemed much as always, but I know how unreliable that can be.

WRAL has reported almost exactly the same article several different times in the last two years, apparently following the completion of another round of chemo. Had hoped that this was the case again, but just saw her statement.

wral.com is back in a John Edwards mode in recent days, mostly reporting which witnesses are spotted as they appear before the Federal grand jury in the investigation still under the holdover Repub prosecutor. The stories in the past always seemed to coincide with things like HCR being before Congress.

65. My prayers are with Elizabeth and the Edwards' family
I had the opportunity to meet several members of the Edwards family when I volunteered for John Edwards' presidential campaign back in 2004. A nice, down-to-earth group of people who've already endured so much tragedy in their lives (John & Elizabeth's son, Wayne, was killed in a car accident when he was 16).

Wishing the Edwards' all the best.
