Fed forced to 'quarantine' one billion $100 bills after printing error makes them worthless Read mo
By DAILY MAIL REPORTER
Last updated at 10:16 PM on 6th December 2010

A printing problem with the new high-tech $100 bills has forced government printers to shut down production - and to quarantine more than one billion of the notes.
The flawed notes represent more than ten per cent of the U.S. currently on the entire planet.

They are being stored in giant vaults at Fort Worth in Texas and in Washington, DC, as the Federal Reserve desperately tries to resolve the problem.

1. How embarrassing. Wonder if it's in the US press at all. I swear,
we screw up so many things!

3. Speaking of screwups...
that Brit fishwrap used the the word 'currently' instead of 'currency.' Spellchecker doesn't pick up on things like that. Good proofreaders must be in short supply everywhere.

4. I don't know if there ARE proofreaders anymore. Another 'high tech'
solution. :7

8. I also like...
"The new notes were to feature new sophisticated security features such as a 3D security strip and a colour-shifting image of a bell."

A bell? I think it is a particular bell. But a guess "a bell" is sufficient.

2. What I would like to know is where was the person in charge of quality control?
Why didn't they catch this error before they made a billion of them?

5. Policies and procedures are in place
to make sure absolutely nobody can be held accountable for any screw-up, no matter how big

6. It seems like it wasn't every bill that was flawed, but if it was up to 30% of the
production at times then yeah - someone should have noticed this before it got to a billion printed. I wonder if they're so uptight about theft that the amount of time spent actually handling the bills is seriously curtailed. Or perhaps they're just really really inept...

9. Oof. 12 cents a note
$120 million wasted. That's a whopper of a mistake.
