83. "not everything the Republicans wanted..."
Sorry, Mr. O, you gave the Republicans EVERYTHING THAT THEY WANTED. That is no compromise, you gave them everything they wanted and got nothing in return. And now, you lie about it with that statement. In 2 years you have learned to suck as bad as almost any bureaucrat.

141. A ONE YEAR extention on unemployment bennies in exchange for TWO years of rich paying no tax
That sounds real fair to me. What do we bargain with in a year? Oh yeah, that's right...SOCIAL SECURITY. Can't wait to see everything go away that we have worked so hard for so this President can use it a "bargaining chip" for yet another Republican screwing plan.

150. Welcome Dokkie!
Glad you are here, however, to insure that you fit in, you need to remember a few things. President Obama is always wrong, and can never do anything right. Everything is Obama's fault, if the republicans block a bill, it's because Obama told them to block it. If a bill fails because some democrats voted no, Obama told them to vote no. Obama said bad things about your mother. If your car won't start, it's Obama's fault. Obama took the last piece of pie. And, we must agree with the republicans that the most important goal we all have is to insure that Obama is a one term president. Even if that means Sarah Palin wins in 2012. Enjoy yourself here, and remember Obama=evil. Oh, and facts, and well reasoned statements are frowned upon.

162. The independent voters did not have to be courted,
especially when most Americans were not in favor of extending the tax cuts for the very wealthy. I say this as an Independent who voted for Obama and will not do so again in 2012. Of course it was critical that unemployment benefits were extended but this is obviously a sellout, and one that was easy to anticipate and avoid before Dem reps abandoned their constituents. But oh well, what the hell. So it takes an extra fifty years to pay down the deficit... which the R claimed to be concerned about before Nov 2. Damn them.

7. The President said he didn't "like" it. Said he found the reasoning behind it "questionable".
Although he actually chose to close this deal he made it clear it was a deal he didn't agree with and found anchored in ill-wisdom.

But we can't have political fights in Washington. So the only option is da cave.

There is just too much at stake to wait until we lose to the Rethugs in 2012 or get more of this tepid 'leadership'.

Sanders, Dean, Grayson or any combination of the three would be great. We need a strong, decisive leader now.

Not capping insurance costs? Insurance companies' stock soaring? Yes, I cannot be denied but I still can't afford it? Yes, I can add my adult child but I can't afford it? No different than COBRA. 139. Obama 08 sticker in AZ
I've kept mine on the PickUp here in FOXnewsLand, Phoenix area, since May of 08. Kept in on despite flying fingers, JDHayworth voters trying to scare me into the curb, golf tees in my tires (I don't golf), and the usual petty spitting and getting my doors keyed. Obama sticker was next to a USMC sticker, so I don't back-off much.

I took it off today. My kid is learning Chinese. We are toast.

I took it off today. There is no position to hold. The administration and the DLC have pretty much made it clear that the ones who count aren't the middle class, only the 0.3%er's.

We (formerly known as the middle-class Americans, now "the unwashed masses") are toast. They won, and always will under the political $et-up that we have operated under for the last 30 years.

I've got a 12 yr old kid whose future in this country I thought, was going to be fought for by this President and the Dem congress-critters. Scratch that. She'll learn Chinese.

28. I kept thinking
It's only been two years, come on...its just been two years. But shit, this isn't the change I had in mind. It's like two sides to the same coin, and there is hardly a daylight's difference between them. The 2% have their congress critters, and it didn't come cheap buying those Phuckers, so they had to have those tax cuts to pay for it. Our elections are now sold to the highest bidder, and its the 2% now who dictate what the rest of us receive. As I see it, it's all downhill from here.

I don't have to like it, and I certainly wont support it. All I can do is watch it, and hope in organizations like Wikileaks takes it all down, open the windows, shift the paradigm.

37. For me it has alway been about direction --
I don't blame him for actions that clearly take time, or for Congress to act on.

What has bothered me from Day 1 has been the directions he has taken on so many issues -- always, always to the right or towards dangerous compromise. :(

It has taken this election for me to fully embrace the two sides/same coin Truth.

I honestly don't think it will be overturned anytime in my lifetime, but I refuse to enable that kind of governing any further.

All this "progressive" stuff is just garbarge. If you are a liberal who started calling yourself a progressive because Saint Ronnie make it into a dirty word, fight back and reclaim the word.

And this liberal thinks that Obama is either a wuss or was never the person so many on DU believed. I didn't believe in Obama before the election, (although I did vote for him; the alternative was untenable) but I did hope. Funny thing is, I'm just as disappointed and feel just as betrayed as those who did believe in him.

I don't like the sandwich. Its not the sandwich I would have made, but when I held the bread slices open to the ASSistant restaurant manager pining for my manager job, and asked him to give me the best he had, he bent over and this is what he gave me. Whatcha gonna do?

"...that we liberals have to suck up this 'bitter pill' and dutifully fall in line."

When do the CONS get their turn to do that more frequently? Feels like the reagan days again. Day after day after day it was "...if president reagan gets his way..." followed by "president reagan got his way again..."

When are we gonna get a president like that?

ONE thing, and the only thing, you can say about the GOP that's good is - they sure stay loyal to their base. They're frickin' whores for their base. Why won't our Dem leadership do the same for/with us? Do they not remember who "brought 'em to the dance?"

I thought we would be getting Clinton's 3rd Term.
Instead, we got Bush the Lessor's 3rd Term.

The next 2 years are going to be hell, worse than 02-06....

151. I dunno....I think they were Good Cop and Bad Cop.
There was a video of them a year before the Election Campaign even started and they were at some function for Rahm and it was supposed to be a "roast" for his Birthday of some such. Axelrod was there and they were all laughing and joking it up with speeches that were funny about Rahm and you'd have thought they'd been good friends forever.

I posted it here on DU once and people trashed me for it because it was during the campaign and I guess folks thought it didn't look good for either Hillary or Obama. I thought Obama would be the best of the two, though, because I was worried about Hillary bringing in the same crowd (Emmanuel and the Banksters) that Clinton had done in his second term. I think we did get Clinton 3 but with more caving and goodies for Wall St. Notice Rahm jumped the ship before the Primary. He knew what was coming down. Saved his butt.

82. THIS^^^^.
2 years of campaigning for Hope and Change.
2 years of "compromising" and taking my Hope.
2 years of capitulating and erasing any "Change".

Goodbye Mr. Obama. Hello utter depression and disillusionment with the Democratic Party and another 12 years in the wilderness while Republican Presidents fuck things up even further and finish the job of killing off the once great United States of America.

My hope was so great and my spirits so high in 2008 that this fall back to our depressing reality hurts so much more than everything else.

Just watch, I bet ANYTHING to ANYONE that this spring when the debt ceiling issue really hits the fan that the Thugs and Baggers are going to get Obama to unilaterally take away 90% of his own Health Care Reform! Never in my lifetime have I witnessed a more feckless and feeble administration when it comes down to really fighting for what they supposedly "believe" in.

I will not vote for Obama in '12.
He may as well not even run in my opinion, and I stand by my assertion that the best thing he could do for the party long term is announce he is not going to run for or accept a nomination for a second term. Even if he stayed exactly the same as he is today - a spineless, direction-less jellyfish of a president - announcing that he is not running would at least allow the party a chance to run someone without the stink and taint of this administration in '12.

He told me we would leave Iraq.
We are still in Iraq.

He told me we would close Gitmo.
We are still housing prisoners in Cuba.

He told me we would have health care for every American as a RIGHT not a PRIVILEGE.
We got single payer off the table unilaterally, negotiated away the public option and will end up with nothing by 2012.

He told me he would be a "fierce advocate" for LGBT issues.
We still have DOMA and DADT and the Obama justice department, on HIS ORDERS, is the reason why...

He told me that he would restore fiscal sanity to our tax policy.
And now, we have the Bush Tax rates one step closer to becoming PERMANENT (anyone buying the idea of this being a "temporary extension" is still slamming back gallons of campaign '08 Kool-Aid).

To borrow a phrase from the retrospective high point of Mr. Obama - ENOUGH!

I am finished with him from this point forward, and he insists on running in '12 then the Democratic Party is finished until possibly the '20 elections, which is IF we still have elections by then given another lost decade of Republican hooliganism in power.

want Senators elected by governors? Why, you may ask - just another step in ending the pretense of Democracy and another step in pushing us to that serfs and nobles scheme that Bush always longed for. Free schooling is also on the list to be ended. Keep 'em dumb and pregnant, producing the next class of ignorant worker bees. They already have laws on the books, fiercely defended by Obama, BTW, that lets them imprison anyone for any reason, so forget armed insurrection - they'll just put us all in high security prisons forever. Sorry, I just can't see any way forward from this besides moving to another country, because ours is well and truly fucked.

76. I reiterate - what are YOU going to do abvout it?
The phrase "crossing the Rubicon" derives from Roman History when, if you presumed to bring an Army across the Rubicon (river) into Roman territory, you were effectively declaring war, from which there was no turning back.

I hear a lot of complaining here, I hear a lot of people throw out the names of the usual suspects (Dean, Kucinich. etc) they'd like to see run, but I DON'T see a lot of people show any willingness to take on the immense organizational, financial and political burden of challenging an incumbent and then (assuming they're successful) taking on the well-funded Republican opponent (complain all you want about campaign finance rules and corporatist media, but those are the rules we have to play under). I don't begrudge anyone complaining about Obama's performance, but I get tired of meaningless diatribes about "lines in the sand".

Is that what you are saying? I fucking know well what "crossing the fucking Rubicon" means, and I think it is time. For 30 years we been doing nothing, and the last 10 have been the worse. Those in power keep pushing to see how much they can do to us before we've had enough. I HAVE HAD ENOUGH. I am going to fight one way or another. I realize that I am relatively powerless, but I dont care. I am going down with a fight. If you want to roll over and let the repukes have their way with you, fine, but not me.

Hi!

First day posting on DU. Wow, managed to get reamed pretty fast on here, probably by folks I actually agree with.

Seriously, is there one meaningful stand he has taken on anything other than working with Republicans?

By not standing up to the people who are hell bent on ruining this country, he has done nothing but hasten its demise.

It's worse than Bush.

It's worse because he should know better.

But with each passing year I see everything getting worse for me and my family. I hate to give up on anyone. But I can't sit here literally sentenced to death because of corporate greed, voter apathy and ignorance and approve of the decisions he has made. My father told me in 1974 that the country was going down the tubes, then proved it by taking me to the beach during the "oil shortage" and pointing to the tankers sitting low in the water just waiting past the three mile limit for the price to go up. I have watched Veterans receive some of the best treatment available, and other Vets be thrown to the dogs. I have watched thieves steal millions of dollars and get away with it, a young girl who stole a can of formula nearly shot, and arrested and jailed, her child taken away from her. The constitution has been trampled, reinterpreted and rendered useless to the people of America.
I and my family live in abject fear. Simply because we are poor. From the time I was 15 until I was 48 I worked unless I was in the hospital. I volunteered in many charities, logging thousands of hours. Yet after 7 heart attacks, 1 major stroke, multiple ulcers, a bad gall bladder and no possibility to have anything fixed because of the blood thinners I have to take. Yet I was denied disability that I have seen many undeserving people get.

I have lost hope and have seen no change. Much worse than that I fear for the lives, safety and health of my children.

Michael

129. I'm not nearly in such dire straights as you, but things seem only to be downhill from here. Damn, I
had intended to give you a word of encouragement, but I don't seem to have one. Sorry. And good luck.

155. Have you applied for Disability more than once?
If not, find a SSD lawyer. They take these cases on contingency, once you get your disability, then the lawyer gets paid. Your disability payments will be backdated to the date you initially applied, and the lawyer takes his/her cut from that. Good luck!

165. No Still appealing the first attempt
I have some good lawyers, They say this is standard automatic rejection to try and save SS money. My only worry is that I will Pass before it arrives and leave my wife of almost 30 years with nothing! She is disabled due to a work injury She tore her thromboid muscles both ways so they can never heal Her case wandered through the appeals process for 10 years before they gave in. My career path was nursing aide, so when I was working I was making good over the table money. I also have a state pension that will kick in once the SS starts so we will be able to live comfortably, If I survive. I know that going up against SS without a lawyer is suicide, but thank you for the good wishes

115. The "deal" smells a lot like Unconditional Surrender to me.
Oh Yes, Japan got to keep their emperor alive as an empty figurehead, and we are getting the same "deal".

I'm going to take a long nap. Wake me up if we suddenly get a DEMOCRAT as President.

it's no good if a line is crossed if one comes crawling back to the voting booth and pleads to have another knife stuck in your back--that's why DU gets so mad at GOP voters

the OP posted this Orwellian bilge just a month ago: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x9505979

what changed since then? how was the December "caving" to the rich any different from the scores of other right-wing policies passively accepted or actively pushed by the WH? is it simply because the election's over and we ungrateful lefties no longer have to be veal-penned?

Blind support of Republican ideals has never been a Democratic principle. We have a right to stay just as much as the blind supporters of Republican ideals have a right to stay. :hi:

147. Good and Bad
Let's face it people, it was either this deal or nothing. The tax cuts for the rich are hard to stomach, but there was quite a bit of good we got too. Unemployment extensions were a necessity. The Earned Income Tax credit extension was huge as is the payroll tax cut. Re instating the Estate Tax was also a big win IMO.

The biggest gripe I have is that the 99ers are left out and the way the tax cuts expire. We'll be in the same situation in 2 years. He should've let just the rich tax cuts expire, but made the others permanent, that way the Repubs would be left in the position of arguing purely on behalf of the rich 2 years from now.

166. This is when we need Ralph Nader to run
NOT in 2000 against Gore!

If Obama is going to lose anyways, and I now have little doubt, its time to send a message to the DLC.
It really feels like Obama has broke the camels back with this latest capitulation. First fight for progressive primary challengers in all ridings, then support those that win as well as the few progressive incumbents left, after that?....rally behind the Green candidate. Its either that or start another party, and its too late for that.

Yes voting Green instead of a Blue Dog corporatist would ensure a Republican win, but sadly, it looks like the Dems have given up on their core values. What else are we supposed to do?
