Kate O'Beirne: Parents of kids in school breakfast programs are criminals
Parents of children who participate in school breakfast programs are "criminally negligent," says the Washington editor of the conservative National Review.

Kate O'Beirne, who also appears as a pundit on MSNBC, made the comment at a Republican strategy session she moderated at the Hudson Institute Friday.

"My question is what poor excuse for a parent can’t rustle up a bowl of cereal and a banana?" O'Beirne asked. "I just don’t get why millions of school children qualify for school breakfasts unless we have a major wide spread problem with child neglect."

She continued, "If that’s how many parents are incapable of pulling together a bowl of cereal and a banana, then we have problems that are way bigger than -- that problem can’t be solved with a school breakfast, because we have parents who are just criminally ... criminally negligent with respect to raising children."

5. Has she priced cereal, fruit and milk recently?
The prices have gone up three or four times what they were ten years ago (maybe more) while wages have stayed flat or gone down. And how about those parents who were laid off because their jobs were outsourced and who are trying to feed their kids on unemployment compensation - if theirs has not been cut off? Or who are working two or three low wage jobs to make ends meet and are not able to devote the time to help their child fix breakfast in the morning?

The problem IS "bigger than that" but it is not criminally negligent parents - it is a system that rewards rich crooks and penalizes real workers.

I live with conservative Christians who do good for the community...all in silence, wanting no attention.
i live with neon-Light,Look-at-me Xtians who make sure everyone sees them at church..while critisizing the poor and down-trodden.
I think Ms. O'Beirne falls in catagory "B"

9. Many people just cannot fathom poverty.
My suggestion is instead of reading about it, go take a walk in their shoes for a week (more than one day) and see why there isn't cereal and milk available in the morning.

12. They Don't Get It
There are only TWO of us yet the idea of eating a lot of cold cereal for breakfast is not in our budget. Cooked cereal is the way to go. As much as we like bananas there are many weeks where the price is too high. Now you have a family of four growing kids and the problem is a lot worse. Add to that poor wages, rising costs of rent etc and you have them counting on those school meals, the food pantry etc. The comments by Rush were beyond the pale. Dumpster dive? What does he have in place of a heart? Also he comments on "just look in the refrigerator" proves he has never even been to a home where the only things they might have would be tea or kool aid with maybe a bit of margarine or ketchup.

37. It's not the money.
I can buy a bag of cereal for a dollar at BigLots.

It's the ability of some parents to even WAKE UP
and feed the kids, or make it to a grocery store
that DOESN'T charge $5.00 for a box of cereal because
the only place you have access to is an inner-city
corner store.

I HATE people that want to deprive children.

26. LOL - we are very rushed in the morning getting our kids to school,
and my daughter solved part of our problem by suggesting "mom, can I just eat at school"? They make toast, eggs, cereal, etc... she loves it. Of course most of the kids eating are getting reduced or free food, but not my daugher. We have a healthy income so I just fill up her on-line account and let her buy whatever she needs for breakfast/lunch. Usually that amounts to about $4.00/day for food. Occasionally I go in and have lunch with her, so I can see for myself the food choices and her lunches aren't half bad.

So, yes, I guess I'm a hardened criminal ...

43. what a offensively fucked up post. any woman staing at home taking care of kids are gravy trainin'
it. couldnt possibly take care of kids single? totally fucked up in order to attack this woman. vast majority of women raising kids with no help is going to be in tough shape. why the need to put down women suggesting marriage is just a ride on gravy train, dismissing what these women do.

want to attack what the woman in the op says... fine. but fuck that shit cause i stay at home and raise my kids and have created a healthy environment for all of us, much to your disdain. would it be tougher if i did it alone with NO support? fuck ya. pretty much that way when i see a man raising his kids without any help from the woman too.

For whatever reason, including bad parenting, kids don't get the food they need at home. We can either take Kate's approach, and seethe about the parents, or we can address the problem of hungry kids.

The mean spirited always want to focus on their anger at the parents, instead of helping the kids.

44. When I was in school, I had to partake of the school breakfast AND lunch programs
It wasn't that my parents couldn't scrape up the money for cereal and a banana, it was that they were too poor to do it consistently (and I was an only child). Of course, this was in the 70s & 80s. I didn't know until I was a pre-teen that food boxes and cans of food actually came in anything other than black and white. I totally grew up on the Acme brand.

I suspect as unemployment benefits give way, more and more children will need to take advantage of those school programs.
