Think Merkel or Karzai were attacked in the cables? Cable calls Daniel Ortega a rapist and murderer
Edited on Tue Dec-07-10 09:49 AM by ck4829
"German leader Merkel is cautious."

"Afghan leader Karzai is paranoid."

"Iranian leader Ahmadinejad is Hitler."

"Nicaraguan leader Ortega is a rapist and a murderer."

Basically the embassy in Managua took every single accusation ever said against him and said that he either personally did it or commanded it directly.

Including this one...

"After the signing of the 1988-1989 peace accords and
the holding of free elections in 1990, the fighters of the
armed resistance ("Contras") to the FSLN regime disarmed as
the peace accords required. However, the FSLN leadership saw
this as an opportunity for revenge, and had its assassins
kill hundreds of Contras, including ordering the murder of
ex-Contra commander Enrique Bermudez in the parking lot of
the intercontinental hotel (today's Hotel Crowne Plaza) in
¶1990."

In reality, nobody knows who did the assassination, the embassy cable even halfheartedly admits this, and his family says that anyone could have had something to do with his assassination; the Sandinistas, one of his fellow Contras, or maybe even the same Iran-Contra network in the US that wanted to cover up the fact that what it did was treason.

1. Although I detest Ortega
and do hold him responsible for the deaths of more than a few women, calling him a murderer and rapist is over the top.

And if you don't know about his revolting record on reproductive rights and the allegations that he abused his step-daughter, here you go:

Sexual abuse allegations

In 1998, Daniel Ortega's adopted stepdaughter Zoilamérica Narváez released a 48-page report<11> describing her allegations that Ortega had systematically sexually abused her from 1979, when she was 11, until 1990.<12> Ortega and his wife Murillo denied the allegations.<13> The case could not proceed in Nicaraguan courts because Ortega had immunity from prosecution as a member of parliament, and the five-year statute of limitations for sexual abuse and rape charges was judged to have been exceeded. Narváez took a complaint to the Inter American Human Rights Commission, which was ruled admissible on 15 October 2001.<14> On 4 March 2002 the Nicaraguan government accepted the Commission's recommendation of a friendly settlement.<10> As of 2006 Ortega continues to deny the allegations, but Narváez has not withdrawn them.<13>

<snip>

While supporting abortion rights during his presidency during the 1980s, Ortega has since embraced the Catholic Church's position of strong opposition.<22> While non-emergency abortions have long been illegal in Nicaragua, recently even abortions "in the case where the pregnancy endangers the mother's life" have been made illegal in the days before the election, with a six-year prison term in such cases, too—a move supported by Ortega.<23[br />
