"The enemy of my enemy is my friend".
Edited on Wed Dec-08-10 12:53 AM by kentuck
Just hold your horses...

This battle is not over. There is an odd coalition forming in the House of Representatives, both against the taxcut deal worked out by Obama and McDonnell, and both for different reasons.

If there is not already a majority of Democrats against this "deal" in the House, it is very close.

But there are enough Republicans, mostly agreeing with the newer ones, that are against paying more unemployment benefits out. They see it as a budget buster. But they are against it.

Together, they have a probably majority in the House to defeat this deal.

Folks, it is not over. It is just beginning.

Break out the popcorn.

edit: "mostly agreeing with"

1. How can UI be considered a "budget buster" compared to the tax cuts?

2. Here's the question: what's going to replace the deal?
It's great to hope that everything grinds to a halt. But what then happens? To the tax cuts, the rest of the lame duck agenda, the unemployed?

5. Sometimes it is better to stand still than to go backwards...
We are losing ground with deals such as this.

6. We can stand still until the GOP takes the House. Then we'll get all sorts
of good deals, right?

9. He can sign nothing. How does that help average people who
will certainly continue to be held hostage?

12. Well, emboldening the terrorists doesn't help anyone.
Negotiating takes two. Capitulating is what we've got going on here, with no end in sight. I actually WANT to pay my taxes. It is the right thing to do.

13. That's not really an answer, though. Obama can refuse to sign
any crappy deal the House comes up with after January, and that might make for happy times in DU land, but that may be cold comfort to anyone who depends on that legislation.

14. I have no sympathy for millionaires who miss their tax breaks or for
kids who have to pay some tax on their inheritance or for those who would starve the Social Security Trust Fund in order to kill it. If we hold out as long as the Rs, then they have to make a deal with instead of vice versa. Not sure who you're concerned about. Tax cuts will not save the economy and letting them expire is not the end of the world. 7. True but...
this issue may not be over as quick as people think?

Even without the newbies, there are enough Tea Party converts in the present bunch to present a possible majority, in my opinion.

11. I wish you were right.
But the progressives in the House have even less backbone than the President. The few with spines aren't enough to stop it and believe me, the rest will vote for it and so will the Rs.
