John Lennon Anniversary: Remembering What Happened 30 Years Ago Today (PHOTOS)

Writing a book about the final day of John Lennon's life was, alternately, sad and satisfying. New York was a different city 30 years ago, a conurbation of squeegee men and graffiti-blotched subway cars and live sex shows on 42nd Street. But the place leaped with a pulse, and Lennon loved it. Out of everywhere on earth, it was where he chose to live. He fought for it, in fact, against a government that strove to deport him for his subversive leanings. People saw him in delis and record stores and in Central Park. In every sense, John was a bona fide New Yorker, not a blow-in who flees to Short Hills or Dobb's Ferry the first time he hears a car backfire. To a Queens boy like myself, that was quite an honor.

3. what baffles me is this
How can Yoko Ono Lennon live in the Dakota apt. building after this happened?

The places gives me the creeps quite honestly.

I would have left New York a long time ago if I was her.

RIP John Lennon!

:kick:

4. We all respond to tragedy and trauma differently.
I've seen a wide range of reactions to sudden and/or violent loss. Nothing baffles me about this anymore.

5. I too remember the day well and I was only 12.
Now I'm several years older than he was when he was murdered. So young! What a loss to the arts and humanity.

9. I was very aware of that when I passed 40.
John had achieved so much and was virtually retired the last five years of his life.

8. Great Beatles Internet Radio Station I found:
Edited on Wed Dec-08-10 11:19 AM by onehandle
They play a nice selection of Beatles and their solo songs. The stream is high quality and has a tiny bit of reverb to give it a real radio sound. You can play it in your browser or click on the links to get it into your player of choice (iTunes, Quicktime, Windows Media, etc..).

I've been streaming it on my iPhone in my car and on my Mac at home since dumping Sirius/XM.

Almost no commercials. They play a Home Depot commercial now and then and that's about it.
